Celebrating Black History Month- Students Hear from Acclaimed Author Steve Jacobson

In recognition of Black History Month, Upper School students gathered in RSPA Panther Hall on Thursday, February 22 to hear from noted sports columnist and author Steve Jacobson. During his discussion, Mr. Jacobson touched on the role black athletes play in breaking down racial barriers encountered throughout major league baseball, as detailed in his novel Carrying Jackie’s Torch.

After receiving a heartfelt introduction from History Club president Hannah Simpson ’12, Mr. Jacobson then relayed firsthand accounts taken from interviews with both black and white athletes over the years. These testimonies provided students with a vivid picture outlining the harsh realities of segregation and the struggles that many black players faced in the major and minor leagues between 1947 and 1968. Students and faculty also indulged in critical discussion with Mr. Jacobson, comparing the experiences and careers of black athletes in the past to issues still present today.

Steve Jacobson earned a journalism degree from Indiana University. A sports reporter and columnist for Newsday for 44 years, Mr. Jacobson was awarded first prize by the Associated Press of New York and “Top Five Sports Columnists” by the Associated Press Sports Editors on numerous occasions. He has also received nomination for a Pulitzer Prize twice, among other accolades. Mr. Jacobson was a consultant for ESPN’s “The Bronx is Burning,” and is also author of The Best Team Money Could Buy.
