Upper School Winter Sports Award Ceremony
The Upper School held its Winter Sports Award Ceremony in RSPA Panther Hall on Thursday, March 8, 2012. An event hosted by the Athletic Department following each athletic season throughout the school year, this program recognized six teams and their members from the 2011-12 winter season.
In his welcoming remarks, Director of Athletics Thomas Moriau congratulated all winter teams on an outstanding season and thanked all parents and coaches for their support and dedication to the Ranney School athletic program. He also noted several championship performances achieved by Ranney’s Upper School athletes. While the varsity girls’ basketball team earned its fourth straight Panther Classic title, the varsity fencing Epee squad garnered its second consecutive NJSIAA District Championship and state qualifier.
Aside from receiving award certificates from winter coaches Noel Delgado, Ph.D., Nancy King, Agota Balot, Emmett Walling, Tyler Schmelz, Tom Weston, Thomas Moriau and Christine Repoli, several very deserving students were also called to the podium to receive team awards that recognized the athletic success, improvement and dedication seen in a select few athletes throughout the season. Team award categories ranged from “Rookie of the Year,” “Most Valuable Player,” “Coach’s Award,” and “Most Improved.”
Following a “season in review” athletic video, three-season varsity athlete Maura Guyler '12 then shared her “Ranney Athletic Experience” with all those in attendance. According to Maura, “The Ranney Athletic Experience” is what it is today because of the coaches. “My coaches are my mentors, no more and no less than my teachers and my parents,” said Maura. “As athletes, we are coached with the same respect we are expected to give fellow teammates and members of the opposing team. We are coached fairly and we are positively encouraged.”
In closing, Maura advised that younger athletes treasure those remaining years left with their coaches, telling her own mentors — coaches King, Delgado, Chavers, Lazic, McNamara and Snyder — that she will surely take a piece of each of them with her upon graduation this spring.

Middle School Winter Sports Award Ceremony
The Ranney School Athletic Department spent the afternoon of March 12, 2012 hosting a Middle School Sports Award Ceremony that recognized those athletes and teams who participated in the 2011-12 winter athletic program. Held in RSPA Panther Hall, the ceremony honored athletes from 10 separate teams with individual awards and certificates.
As audience members took to their seats, Ranney’s Director of Athletics Thomas Moriau approached the podium to welcome all family, friends and faculty in attendance. Addressing those seated before him, he thanked the Middle School for a spectacular season that included several noteworthy moments. Not only did the girls’ varsity basketball team earn its second CJAl title in just two years, but the Panther swim team also garnered its third straight undefeated season — a season that ended with the boys’ squad placing first at the school’s 4th Annual Ranney School Swim Invite on February 15, 2012. Both received sweatshirts for these amazing feats!
Amidst applause from faculty members, students and parents, coaches Nancy King, Janine Mitreuter, Brian Dolan, Ian McNamara, Michael Ling, Eileen McEnery and Alexis Snyder then introduced their teams’ members, presented certificates and awarded trophies. A means of recognizing individual success, trophies are presented to a number of athletes every season. Awards range from “Sportsmanship Award” to “Most Improved,” and honor scholar-athletes who have not only gained respect but also demonstrated respect towards others, served as a valuable player to their team, or shown significant improvement from start to finish.
In addition to award presentations, the audience also viewed a “season in review” sports montage. Closing the afternoon’s ceremony was eighth grade boys’ basketball player James Geraghty ’16, who spoke of “The Ranney Experience.” Throughout his Middle School career, James has learned that being successful is not about being that person who scores the most points, but about being the person who passes the ball so that someone else can score; being the one who puts out their hand to help someone else up off the floor. “The most successful teams are the ones that are unified, where players trust in and look out for one another,” said James.
