Ranney’s Jr. Tri-M Music Honor Society hosted its 5th Annual “Music in Our Middle School” week from April 10 until April 13. An event recommended annually by the National Association for Music Education (NAfME), this year’s “Music in Our Middle School” week marked the Jr. Tri-M Honor Society’s second service project completed since September, 2011.
While the society’s first service project included a very successful
“Musical Toys for Tots” campaign in December, “Music in Our Middle School” week required that all Jr. Tri-M members design a week-long program of events highlighting the importance of music education in our school. “It is so inspiring to see this young generation of musicians spread their passion and love for music to all,” said Lower and Middle School strings teacher Dr. Dorothy Sobieski.
Using Internet resources like Youtube, SurveyMonkey and Weebly, students within the Ranney Chapter of Jr. Tri-M not only broadcast
daily video announcements and trivia contests in homerooms throughout the Middle School, but also created a
music survey similar to the Grammy Awards. While some student-made videos addressed topics like the origin of music and discussed the long term effects that music has on the development of the child as a whole, others featured music trivia, with “questions of the day” ranging from: “Which artist holds the record for most hits in one album?” to “What music application recently was named the most popular music app?” All daily trivia contest winners received gift cards to iTunes or other local retail stores.
After asking that students vote for their favorite Pop, R&B, Rock, Country and Adele song, Jr. Tri-M then hosted its Ranney Grammy Awards on the afternoon of Friday, April 13, 2012. The results were as follows:
Best Pop Song- “Moves Like Jagger” by Maroon 5
Best R&B Song- “Forget You” by Cee Lo Green
Best Rock Song- “Don’t Stop Believin’” by Journey
Best Country Song- “If I Die Young” by The Band Perry
Best Adele Song- “Set Fire to the Rain”
These Ranney Grammy Award winners were showcased at a “Black Out” Dance that also celebrated the hard work of members within the Jr. Tri-M Music Honor Society on Friday evening. Music “rocked” the Dining Hall as students danced the night away, participated in raffles and took part in fun group activities beneath a brilliant display of black lights and glow-in-the-dark decorations. All in all, the danced served as a perfect end to the perfect week.
Next up on the Jr. Tri-M Honor Society’s agenda, its members are already busy creating the Ranney Chapter’s annual digital “scrapbook” for submission to the Tri-M National Office. Through submission, Ranney stands a chance at being awarded distinction in a National Chapter of the Year recognition program.
