Honor Societies Welcome 110 New Members at Annual Induction

Family, friends and faculty gathered in RSPA Panther Hall to congratulate approximately 80 Upper School students on their exceptional academic leadership, scholarship and character during a Ranney School Honor Societies Induction Ceremony on April 23, 2012.

Monday evening’s formal ceremony welcomed 110 members into the following honor societies: Tri-M Music Honor Society (13 inductees); International Thespian Society (10 inductees); National Art Honor Society (nine inductees); Mu Alpha Theta Mathematics Honor Society (four inductees); Science National Honor Society (11 inductees); Société Honoraire de Français (eight inductees); Sociedad Honoraria Hispánica (22 inductees); National Honor Society (21 inductees); and Cum Laude Society (12 inductees).

In his opening remarks, Head of the Upper School Paul Zanowski noted that these nine honor societies represent the knowledge, vision and honor found in all students at Ranney. Despite having a wide variety of interests ranging from theater, music and art to science and math, he added that each inductee is similar in that he or she demonstrates a remarkable passion to succeed in his or her area of interest.

During his address, Head of School Lawrence S. Sykoff, Ed.D. touched on “being smart” in the 21st century. According to Dr. Sykoff, being smart not only requires that one acquire good grades, but also exhibit creativity, character, critical thinking, communication, collaboration and cosmopolitanism, better known as the six Cs. He then introduced one student and one parent, who exemplify each of the above characteristics as well as Knowledge, Vision and Honor – Alexandra Seneca ’13 and John Weiland. While Alex recently received a Junior Humanitarian Award on behalf of CASA for Children of Monmouth County, Mr. Weiland was granted a prestigious 2012 Horatio Alger Award. Founded in 1947, the Horatio Alger Association honors the achievements of outstanding individuals who have succeeded in spite of adversity, encouraging adolescents to pursue their dreams through higher education.

Mr. Weiland told members of the audience that although he faced many set-backs throughout his youth, these hardships were a blessing in disguise, as they have taught him hard work and dedication. After acknowledging that all 80 honor society inductees have an equal potential to succeed, Mr. Weiland shared his mathematical equation for success: 20% intellectual profile, 30% attitude, and 50% perspiration and hard work. In recognition of their leadership, Dr. Sykoff presented both Alexandra and Mr. Weiland with the Headmaster’s Medallion.

Following a brief introduction from Mr. Zanowski, Upper School Dean of Students Noel Delgado, Ph.D. then spoke on leading a scholarly life. He advised students to find a subject they show passion for and excel in it. “To lead a scholarly life, you need to find what it is that you enjoy studying, for personal gratification and not just for academic excellence,” said Dr. Delgado. According to Dr. Delgado, pure examples of those who lead a scholarly life can be found within the classrooms at Ranney, in art, English and math teachers like Kate Greenberg, Douglas Felter and Christine Repoli.

After receiving honor cords, certificates and pins from their respective honor society’s officers and advisors, students took to their seats as Director of College Guidance Myra Simpson approached the podium. In the ceremony’s closing remarks, Ms. Simpson left students with the following charge: to continue the habits of scholarship and service that have brought them to where they stand today. In addition, she challenged them to make the most of their membership by actively participating in the chapter and community. This school year alone, four of Ranney's Upper School honor societies participated in community service projects to benefit others.
