Upper School Instrumental Concert Honors Senior-Musicians

Ranney’s Performing Arts Department hosted its first in a series of spring concerts — the Upper School Instrumental Concert — in RSPA Panther Hall on Friday, May 4, 2012. Aside from highlighting the musical talents of all students grades nine through 12, the evening also bestowed special recognition upon several Ranney seniors, many of whom gave farewell performances atop the Roberts’ Stage.

After hearing a song entitled Pacem, meaning peace, from the Upper School Chamber Chorus, which was directed by Performing Arts Chair Tess Nielsen and accompanied by senior Christa Dalmazio as well as Anthony Dennis ’14 on both piano and violin, Ranney’s nine-member Chamber Ensemble then took to the stage. Alongside faculty accompanists Dorothea Lippart and Nicole Martone, D. Litt., senior Sophia Lee displayed her flute-playing skills during performances to such songs as Air and Concerto for Two Violins. Meanwhile, senior Hannah Simpson also served as a soprano soloist who sang Burton Lane’s Look to the Rainbow alongside the Chamber Ensemble, which was led by Dorothy Sobieski, D.M.A.

Following a brief intermission complete with coffee and dessert, audience members next heard from the Upper School Jazz Band, directed by Kevin Cotter. While senior Val Kharkover performed saxophone solos during such songs as John Coltrane’s Some Other Blues and Count Basie’s Jive at Five, senior Evan Glazman also shined during the final performance of the evening — Chuck Mangione’s Land of Make Believe. According to Mr. Cotter, Evan has appeared in at least one concert across all three divisions each year for the past four years.

Each of the evening’s five honored seniors, Christa Dalmazio, Sophia Lee, Hannah Simpson, Val Kharkover, and Evan Glazman, have shown a wide range of involvement in Ranney’s Performing Arts program throughout their high school careers. Their talents will be greatly missed as they continue on to some of the nation’s best schools this fall.
