As part of the Lower School’s expanded afterschool activities program known as “Ranney Plus,” which now includes two soccer clinics as well as field hockey, swimming, girls’ lacrosse and spring golf sessions, Ranney’s eight-member Lady Panther lacrosse team attended a Tri-State Lacrosse Luau in Mercer County on May 6, 2012.

Led by former varsity girls’ lacrosse coach David Poupard, the Lower School’s girls’ lacrosse program not only grants all female participants the opportunity to hone their skills, but to also compete in games against teams from surrounding school boroughs as well as neighboring states. Beginning Tuesday, April 17, the girls’ lacrosse team has spent two days per week on the school’s front field anxiously preparing for the Tri-State Luau.

The girls proudly earned their first-ever victory against a talented team from Brooklyn during one of their matches on Sunday afternoon. Tied with their opponent following a goal from Ava Poupard ’21, the game’s winning goal was then scored by Jessica Hamelsky ’21. Other contributions on offense were also seen by Taylor Schoenhut ’21, Tatiana Batson ’21 and Siobhan Jones ’21 who each acquired several ground balls. Meanwhile, Ranney managed to shut down Brooklyn on defense as Haeun Kim ’21, Mackenzie Hauck ’21 and Emily Goodman ’21 earned numerous key plays.

Overall, it was a great day as the girls improved with each and every game that they played. This day-long tournament, however, not only consisted of opportunities to learn and improve on the game of lacrosse, but also provided lots of fun-filled activities as well. When not spending time on the field, the girls could be found relaxing in the Ranney Luau tent or participating in limbo and team costume contests, in which they demonstrated their flexibility and placed among the best dressed teams.
