Middle School Concert Offers Wide Array of Music

The Performing Arts Department hosted its third concert of the spring — A Middle School Concert — in RSPA Panther Hall on Thursday, May 17, 2012.
The Performing Arts Department hosted its third concert of the spring — A Middle School Concert — in RSPA Panther Hall on Thursday, May 17, 2012.

Following the Pledge of Allegiance led by Jr. Tri-M® Music Honor Society President Ruchi Raval ’16, the evening began with three performances from the Middle School Concert Band, directed by Kevin Cotter. From classical to modern-day music, the Band’s musical selection ranged from J. O’Reilly’s arrangement of A Mozart Mix to Lady Gaga’s hit song, Poker Face.

Next to take to the Roberts’ Stage was the Middle School Chamber Music Club led by Dorothy Sobieski, D.M.A. Accompanied by Dr. Sobieski on the violin, students Megan Singh ’16, Brittany Hofferber ’17, Anisha Gupta ’18 and Pooja Nayyar ’17 graced the audience with Vivaldi’s Concerto in D Major, III Allegro. Meanwhile, Sophia Jackman ’16, Jerome Cohen ’16, Sana Zaidi ’16 and Paul Jensen ’18 performed Gebauer’s Allegro for Piano Quartet playing the violin, cello and piano.

In addition to Paul, also on piano throughout the evening were students Liam Fitzmaurice ’17 and Sarah Killian ’18. While Liam played Pescetti’s Sonata No. 6 in C Minor, Sarah accompanied Mrs. Torrente’s Middle School Chorus group, which sang My Sha-La-La-La Locker’s Stuck, Let Me Ride and Why We Sing — songs that featured soloists Taylor Zenner ’17, Karl Brand ’16 and Tessa Payer ’16. Sarah performed Faltermeyer’s Axel F as well.

Once again returning to the stage after a brief intermission was the Middle School Chamber Music Club, as members Nelson Chan ’16, Dean Parker ’16 and Caroline Billyard ’17 played Mozart’s String Quartet in G Major, K. 156, I Presto alongside Dr. Sobieski on viola. For the “Gleek” in all of us, the Middle School Chorus then sang three arrangements closely resembling the style seen on the popular television show, Glee. Songs spanned from Bruno Mars’ The Lazy Song to Katy Perry’s Firework, and featured Aidan Flynn ’18 and Jamie Shamilian ’16 on guitar.

Similar to the Middle School Concert Band, the Middle School Orchestra also went from classical to modern-day when it not only performed Mozart’s Amadeus! (Symphony No. 25), but also played Sir Elton John’s Crocodile Rock. A great way to end the evening before heading off to compete at a “Music in the Parks Festival” on Friday morning, the Orchestra also presented a moving rendition of Journey’s Don’t Stop Believin’, accompanied by senior Evan Glazman on the drums.

The spring concert series’ final performance, originally set to take place on May 22, 2012, has now been moved to Tuesday, May 29, 2012. Doors will open at 7:00 p.m. On behalf of the Performing Arts Department, we hope to see you there!
