Each year, the Ranney community recognizes the many accomplishments of its seniors throughout their Upper School years by presenting numerous academic awards at an Honors Convocation held several weeks prior to Commencement. This spring’s Honors Convocation, hosted May 21, 2012, paid tribute to a majority of those 62 students representing this year’s graduating class.
Monday morning’s ceremony in RSPA Panther Hall marked the beginning of a series of events, which occur during, what Head of School Lawrence S. Sykoff, Ed.D. described as, an entire week dedicated to celebrating a special group of seniors before they venture out into the world. Other activities set to take place before graduation include a luncheon with Dr. Sykoff in the Dining Hall, senior-Beginner breakfast in the Commons, and farewell march throughout the Lower/Middle School to the Crescent. “These events provide a way of saying goodbye to our seniors as they say farewell to the school,” explained Dr. Sykoff.
Before presenting select seniors with awards in such areas as history, art history, economics, English, science, computer science, mathematics, French, Spanish, music, theatre, the visual arts and more, Upper School math teacher Brian Daly first shared his thoughts on celebrating one’s own achievements. According to Mr. Daly, celebrating achievement not only leaves one with a feeling of success, but also motivates one to achieve other, more difficult, goals along the way. “Achievements fuel the fire that gets you to where you want to be in life,” said Mr. Daly.
Aside from receiving departmental awards — including a new Music Industry Award — from Upper School faculty and administration members, several exceptional seniors also earned special awards from Dr. Sykoff, Dean of Students Noel Delgado, Ph.D., Director of College Guidance Myra Simpson, Director of Aquatics Emmett Walling and RSPA President Mimi Keenan. Special awards presented throughout the ceremony ranged from the following: National Merit Scholarships, the Ram Sheila Bharara Communications Award,
AP Scholar Awards, the
President’s Award for Educational Excellence, the NJSIAA Scholar-Athlete Award, the Ranney School Parents’ Association (RSPA) Award, and Excellence in Citizenship Awards. In addition, special commendations were granted to both
Christa Dalmazio ’12 and
Lauren Harris ’12. While
Christa was recognized by the National Foundation for Advancement in the Arts (NFAA),
Lauren was honored by the New Jersey Chapter of the Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese (NJAATSP). Ranney rower
Craig Slater ’12 was also recognized for his success at the May 19th Stotesbury Regatta, where he received the very prestigious John B. Kelly Award after securing first place in a Men’s Senior Single race.
According to Dr. Delgado, much of the success seen in all students at Ranney stems from a unique relationship between teachers and students. In recognition of their mentors, all students in attendance gave each teacher a round of applause for being the guiding force behind many of their accomplishments as Panthers.
In her closing remarks, English Department Chair Veronica Warren asked the Class of 2012, “What recognition do you give yourself this year?” Whether one feels a sense of accomplishment after tutoring a classmate, participating in community service, or simply welcoming a new student as a friend, Mrs. Warren noted that receiving even the smallest form of recognition is far more important than receiving a gift for doing good deeds. “All of your successes throughout the years have given great cause for celebration,” concluded Mrs. Warren.
