Upper School Athletes Attend Athletics Convocation
Ranney’s Upper School scholar-athletes spent their Thursday afternoon at an Upper School Athletics Convocation in RSPA Panther Hall. Hosted by members within the Athletic Department, this ceremony not only honored those teams that participated in the spring sports season, but also recognized various individuals for year-round athletic success.
During what has been — according to Director of Aquatics Emmett Walling — “an exceptional year for teams, coaches, and athletes alike,” this year has seen some of the Athletic Department’s finest performances yet. Whether playing on the basketball or tennis courts, doing laps in the pool, running around the Guidone Track or rowing down the river in a brand new racing shell, success and improvement could be found around just about every corner at Ranney this school year. While the varsity girls’ basketball team earned yet another Panther Classic title and the varsity girls’ tennis team earned its fourth straight NJSIAA Non-Public ‘B’ South Sectional title, the varsity swim as well as track and field teams also broke several new school records. In addition, Ranney’s crew team managed to earn its second national rowing title following a fine outing by senior
Craig Slater at the SRAA National Championships. In recognition of
Craig’s fine win, which also landed him the
Triple Crown of Scholastic Rowing, Head of School Lawrence S. Sykoff, Ed.D. proudly presented him with a trophy signifying excellence.
The awards portion of the ceremony began next, as coaches Brian Dolan, Daniel Lippiello, Christel Contrera, Nancy King, Eileen McEnery, Alexis Snyder, Alison Chavers ’07, Joseph Tweed, Mark DiGiovanni, Michael Dunn, Christine Repoli, Joshua Prown, Jessica Atwood and Michael Ling called each spring baseball, tennis, track and field, lacrosse, golf, crew and softball participant to the podium to receive both team certificates and individual awards. Such individual awards included the “Rookie of the Year Award,” “Coach’s Award” and “Hustle Award.”
In addition, Dr. Sykoff, Mr. Walling, Physical Education teacher Ian McNamara and varsity tennis coach Christel Contrera also presented several major awards throughout the afternoon. These consisted of the “Headmaster Senior Athletic Award” as given by Dr. Sykoff, the “Panther Pride Dedication and Commitment Award” as given by Mr. Walling, the “Golden ‘R’ Prize” as presented by Mr. McNamara and the Eugenie B. Edwards Spirit of Tennis Scholarship as presented by Ms. Contrera.
After viewing a season in review athletic video, the audience then heard from senior-athlete Sarah Bartosh. From her experiences playing softball and field hockey for the Lady Panthers, Sarah discovered that, at the end of the day, it does not matter what the scoreboard says. “I’ve learned that what really matters is supporting one another, keeping a positive attitude, setting goals and focusing on achieving them,” said Sarah.
In closing,
Sarah left the audience with several pieces of very important advice: “Believe in yourself and your teammates, work together and always keep your spirits high.”

Middle School Concludes Spring Sports Season with Awards Assembly Ranney’s Athletic Department hosted its spring 2012 Athletic Awards Program in RSPA Panther Hall on Tuesday, May 29. Not only did the morning’s assembly honor the accomplishments of those teams and players representing the Panthers throughout the spring sports season, but it also recognized several individual athletes for year-round athletic success as well.
In his welcoming remarks, Director of Aquatics Emmett Walling congratulated each athlete on a successful spring season, which yielded an undefeated 7-0 record from the Middle School boys’ tennis team and winning seasons from both the boys’ baseball and girls’ lacrosse teams. He then thanked all eighth grade scholar-athletes for their outstanding contributions to the athletic program, and ended in saying that he looks forward to their involvement at the varsity level next school year.
With that, coaches Barbara Bongiovanni, Anna Lazic, Joshua Prown, Rebecca Sullivan, Karen Britto, Brian Dolan, Eileen McEnery, Nancy King, Brooke Connell, Alison Chavers ’07 and Ian McNamara presented participation awards to a worthy group of students who took part in boys’ tennis, crew, softball, baseball, track and field, lacrosse and golf this spring. In addition, individual awards in categories ranging from “Most Valuable Player” and “Sportsmanship Award” to “Coach’s Award” and “Most Improved” were also given to numerous scholar-athletes in recognition of their hard work, dedication, talent and leadership capabilities demonstrated on the field.
After receiving major athletic awards including the “Panther Pride Award,” “Outstanding Athlete Award” and “Blue and White Award” from Mr. Walling and Physical Education teacher Ian McNamara, and viewing a season in review video, the audience later heard from scholar-athlete Karl Brand ’16, who shared his Ranney athletic experience with all in attendance. Aside from recalling some of his favorite memories, including this year’s CJAL soccer Championship, which would have been impossible if not for goals scored by two younger players — James Wolfe ’17 and Christian Pacifico ’18 — Karl also listed some of the many advantages that come from spending three years playing at the Middle School level. Through the help of fellow coaches and teammates, “I learned lessons in the importance of sportsmanship, gained knowledge in my sport and developed a drive to win every single game,” said Karl.
Congratulations to all scholar-athletes for demonstrating the
Knowledge, Vision, Honor needed to succeed, and especially to the following major award winners:
