Approximately 150 faculty and staff members gathered in the Dining Hall on Tuesday, June 13 for a luncheon that celebrated those successes, achievements and milestones set throughout the school year, as well as acknowledged several outstanding members within the Ranney community, whose sincere efforts continue to advance the mission-promise…that every child will be known and valued.
This year’s Faculty and Staff Honors Celebration opened with a musical showcase from fifth grade members of the Lower School Orchestra, led by director Dorothy Sobieski, D.M.A. Aside from giving special thanks to various administrators, teachers and advisors in his welcoming remarks, Head of School Lawrence S. Sykoff, Ed.D. also took the time to recognize those goals achieved throughout the 2011-2012 academic year. Such accomplishments ranged from producing numerous award-winning publications and hosting multiple sold-out musical performances, to instituting several technological advancements including the use of social media and a one-to-one laptop program, and receiving accreditation from the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools (MSACS). “This has been another wonderful year…by choice, not by chance, and we should all be very proud and grateful,” he concluded.
Before calling last year’s recipients up to present five major awards to this year’s distinguished faculty and administrators, Head of the Lower School and Head for Academic Administration Patricia Marshall first paid tribute to several new, current and retiring employees. Together, Ranney’s faculty and staff celebrated two marriages, the birth of two babies, and more. Meanwhile, they also congratulated longtime receptionist Marie Ahearn — “the voice of Ranney" — on her retirement after 11 years of commitment and service to the school and its students. In addition to welcoming four new faculty, staff and administrators with 10 or more years of dedicated service to Ranney and its students into the “Blue and White Lifer Society,” the program also inducted six distinguished members with 15 to 25 years of service into the school’s “Faculty Circle” as well.
Next, numerous major awards were presented, in recognition of those who portray excellence in teaching and empathy towards others, embody the values of Knowledge, Vision, Honor, continually lead the way for others, demonstrate the qualities of a true leader, and value the mission-promise…that every child will be known and valued. Introduced this school year, teachers will also have the opportunity to receive another accolade, the “Blue Ribbon Award,” at next spring’s Faculty and Staff Honors Celebration. Made possible thanks to a generous donation from the Charles Lafitte Foundation, educators eligible for the “Blue Ribbon Award” must model the 21st century initiatives outlined by the school’s Strategic Plan (now entering its third year) and demonstrate a visionary approach to teaching.
