Jr. Tri-M Honor Society Earns Chapter of the Year Award

Congratulations to Ranney’s Jr. Tri-M® Music Honor Society, which earned recognition from the National Association for Music Education as this year’s
Tri-M Chapter of the Year in the Junior Division. This is the second time in five years that the Ranney Jr. Tri-M chapter has been recognized as Chapter of the Year in this competition including hundreds of schools across the nation.

Led by Jr. Tri-M® Advisor Lillianne Torrente, the Music Honor Society and its members spent this past school year organizing two service projects including a musical “Toys for Tots” campaign and “Music in Our Schools Week.”  While the society was responsible for purchasing and donating approximately 150 music-related toys to benefit Toys for Tots on December 5, 2011, it also hosted a “Music in our Schools Week” that highlighted the importance of a music education at Ranney just this spring.

Both in recognition of its hard work throughout the 2011-2012 school year and as a result of earning Chapter of the Year, Ranney’s Jr. Tri-M® Music Honor Society will receive a letter and plaque from the National Association for Music Education (NAfME), and will be featured in the August edition of Teaching Music magazine as well as on the NAfME website. In addition, the chapter will receive a check for $800 to be used for a chapter enrichment activity in the upcoming year. “The Performing Arts Department is looking forward to putting this funding to good use in further developing music education opportunities for our Middle School students,” said Head of the Middle School David Fischer.

After receiving First Runner-Up in 2011, a check for $600 granted three students — Chloe Triolo (’15), George Timmins ’15 and Mohnish Rachuru ’15 — the opportunity to continue their music studies during the summer months. These students, who were selected based on their exemplary academic, musical, service and leadership contributions to the school, used their $200 scholarships to purchase new instruments, vocal lessons and more.

Chapter #4410 has received continuous recognition in the Tri-M® Chapter of the Year Contest since 2008. A contest sponsored annually by the National Association for Music Education (formerly the MENC), Ranney has not only earned Second Runner-Up twice (2008 and 2010), and First Runner-Up once (2011), but this year also marked its second time receiving the very prestigious Chapter of the Year Award as well (2009 and 2012). “Being as this recognition has been offered to Ranney’s chapter of the Jr. Tri-M for a number of consecutive years, it highlights the outstanding quality and dedication of our Performing Arts Department — specifically of Mrs. Torrente, the chapter’s advisor,” said Mr. Fischer.

Those student officers who worked side by side with Mrs. Torrente to complete several projects through this year’s Jr.
Tri-M Music Honor Society were as follows: President Ruchi Raval ’16, Vice President Sana Zaidi ’16, Secretary Nikhil Lakhani ’16, Historian Sallie Haas ’16, Treasurer Shruthi Vaidyaselvan ’16, Internet Officer Tessa Payer ’16, Public Relations Officer Megan Singh ’16, Programs and Events Officer Audra Smires ’16 and Communications Officer Kyra Citron ’16.

Congratulations to all officers, members and Mrs. Torrente on a job well done!
