At Ranney, every child is known and valued. This school year, many athletes and students from various grade levels soared to new and outstanding heights. While we recognize the hard work and talent of all students at Ranney, a number have recently shared their notable highlights with us, and we congratulate them on these achievements. They include: Carmine Mastrokostas ’18, Sabrina Palazzolo ’14, Shana Fitzmaurice ’19, the Lower School Tech Club, Mackenzie Schultz ’19 and Alec Bijou ’15.

Carmine Mastrokostas (Freehold)
An avid thespian at Ranney School, Carmine Mastrokostas ’18 received a personal invitation from iTheatrics' (the creators of the Broadway Junior Collection) Choreographer Steven Kennedy to appear in a Disney Choreography DVD shoot from June 27 until July 3, 2012. Carmine, along with several other students from across the country, spent seven days performing scenes from such musicals as Hairspray, Jr. and Xanadu, Jr. — all for a DVD that will be used as a resource for music educators worldwide.

Sabrina Palazzolo (Colts Neck)
Sabrina Palazzolo ’14 made it to the top-10 round of the Nashville Hootenanny “Teen Hoot” contest, a showcase of the best new young singer/songwriters. The top five winners of this contest will travel to Nashville, Tennessee where they will sing in front of talent scouts and professional music coaches on July 6 and 7, 2012.

Shana Fitzmaurice (Spring Lake)
For the fourth consecutive year, Lower School student Shana Fitzmaurice ’19 attended the National Piano Playing Auditions, where she received a perfect score on May 23, 2012. Hosted annually by the National Guild of Piano Teachers — whose primary function is establishing definite goals and awards for students of all grades and age levels — students like Shana were asked to play 10 pieces from memory. After receiving superior grades for accuracy, technique, rhythm, interpretation and more, Shana was placed in a “Superior” citywide circle. Students who receive this rating are recognized for their polished performances, and are qualified to represent their schools in citywide or countrywide competitions.

Lower School Tech Club
Congratulations to those fifth grade students within the Lower School Tech Club who produced a remarkable anti-bullying video with advisor Maureen Wood this spring. Using flip cameras and iMovie, the group was able to create a short film that not only helped Lower School students recognize the various ways in which to make a difference in the lives of others, but that also depicted the sense of community found amongst students and teachers at Ranney. The video first aired at a Lower School Gathering on May 18, 2012. Those students responsible for the video also dressed in “Panthers against Bullying” T-shirts at the assembly.

Mackenzie Shultz (Colts Neck)
Sponsored by The Food Allergy and Anaphylaxis Network (FAAN), Mackenzie Schultz ’19 was selected as a “Heart of FAAN Child Ambassador” in the April/May 2012 Edition of a Food Allergy News for Kids newsletter. Now a fifth grade student at Ranney, Mackenzie first learned of her allergy to tree nuts in Kindergarten. Since then, Mackenzie has turned her attention to raising awareness about food allergies. “I want kids without food allergies to see that kids with food allergies are just like them, and have feelings,” said Mackenzie.

Alec Bijou (Middletown)
The Lower School division would like to acknowledge Alec Bijou ’15, who bravely shared his struggle with food allergies and provided a brief lesson on food allergies to students at a Lower School Gathering on May 18, 2012. During his presentation on food allergies, Alec not only discussed the top-eight types of allergies and various symptoms of an allergic reaction, but also provided five steps to being a good friend to someone who suffers from a food allergy: 1) Don’t make jokes; 2) Don’t share food; 3) Wash your hands after eating; 4) Ask friends what they are allergic to and avoid it; and 5) If a friend becomes ill, get help immediately.
