Ranney Summer Programs’ Actors and Musicians Bring Curriculum to Life

Two weeks of highly-focused performing arts programming culminated in an exceptional presentation from Ranney Summer Programs’ most creative kids – actors and musicians – on the Roberts’ Stage in RSPA Panther Hall on Friday, July 6, 2012. Presented by the Music Conservatory and Performing Arts Academy, a concert entitled “Summer of Music” showcased two Session One summer courses offered at Ranney between June 25 and July 6.

Presenting first during this highlight performance were members from Ranney’s Drama Insights: Character Acting and Scene Study course. After spending two weeks studying acting technique, vocal production and spontaneous expression with Music Theater/Drama Director Tess Nielsen, a group of 11 actors confidently took its summer curriculum from page to stage as it graced an audience comprised of faculty members, families and friends with staged readings and short skits. With each act taken from children’s literature, performances throughout the morning included scenes from Stephen Flaherty’s Seussical (“O, the Thinks you can Think”) and segments from timeless novels written by such authors as Lewis Carroll (Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland), Mark Twain (The Adventures of Tom Sawyer) and Harper Lee (To Kill a Mockingbird).

Next to take the stage were musicians from Ranney’s Instrumental Insights: Orchestra course as led by Orchestra Director Dorothy Sobieski, D.M.A. and Assistant Orchestra Director Katherine Roselli. After devoting two weeks to sight reading, rhythmic reading, bowing techniques and more, 24 students encompassing the Beginner Class, Chamber Music Ensemble or String Orchestra performed such songs as Rolling Along, Simple Gifts and Country Hoedown. In an encore presentation, all three ensembles also joined together to play Coldplay’s Viva la Vida — a true testament of the progress seen in each musician over such a short period of time.

Ranney Summer Programs provides a perfect venue for exceptional performing arts experiences, with significant growth in skills and confidence,” said Director of Student Support Services and Summer School Kathleen Deeken.”It was a pleasure to see how such hard work and two weeks of dedication could result in such a fine outcome.”
