College Guidance Office Receives Daniel B. Goldberg M.D., Mission-Promise Award

An award established in honor of Board of Trustees president emeritus Dr. Daniel B. Goldberg in 2011, this year’s 2012 Daniel B. Goldberg, M.D. Mission-Promise Award was given to a team of educators and leaders who, together, personify Ranney’s mission-promise…that every child will be known and valued.

Thanks to those esteemed colleagues within Ranney’s College Guidance Office, students are able to successfully find their perfect match college or university, making a seemingly daunting 21st century college admissions process — a transition from one’s “home” to the post-secondary school of his or her choice — both smooth and enriching. Like Dr. Goldberg, the members of Ranney’s College Guidance Office demonstrate sustained leadership, all the while paving the way for students to reach their full potential within and beyond the walls of Ranney.

Whether planning parent programs and forums for nationally acclaimed guest speakers, contributing to a College Office magazine known as The Beacon, pulling together the school’s college admissions manual, or presenting and publishing work at a regional and national level — just as Director of College Guidance Myra Simpson recently did in The New York Times this past May — this team has unquestionably advanced Ranney’s mission-promise aimed at touching the lives of hundreds of graduates one student at a time. The College Office at Ranney School works closely with all students, parents, teachers and advisors, to learn those special qualities that make each child unique, and uniquely successful.

Using Knowledge, Vision, Honor as their compass, Ms. Simpson, along with Guidance Counselors Adam Materasso and Joseph Tweed, and the rest of the College Guidance Office, understand their role in guiding students through the admissions process, offering programs, calendar planning, financial planning and overall emotional support to families as they work to transition their children from home to college life.

“Through it all, they are humble in nature — they are the first to sing the praises of our students and teachers, and quick to share the spotlight,” said Head of School Lawrence S. Sykoff, Ed.D. at this year’s Faculty and Staff Honors Celebration.

Also, congratulations to Director of College Guidance Myra Simpson, who is now President Elect of the New Jersey Association for College Admissions Counseling (NJACAC) and is a Cabinet member for the Association of College Counselors in Independent Schools (ACCIS).
