Congratulations to Ranney School alumna Lauren Harris ’12 of Spring Lake, who will receive an Aspiring Youth award at the 27th Annual Golden Osprey Awards dinner reception this October.
Hosted by the President and Board of Directors of the Southern Monmouth Chamber of Commerce each year, the Golden Osprey Awards recognizes those individuals who have made significant contributions to the southern Monmouth region. While awards are granted in four separate categories — Business Excellence, Outstanding Community Service, Outstanding Chamber Service and Aspiring Youth — Lauren’s Osprey Award for Aspiring Youth is presented annually to that student who best demonstrates scholastic achievement, participates in extracurricular activities and involves his or herself in community outreach initiatives.
Ranney’s Upper School Leadership Team comprised of several esteemed faculty members nominated Lauren for the Golden Osprey Awards this spring. Throughout her time as a Panther, Lauren proved herself a standout student, who managed to graduate top of her class while taking 10 Advancement Placement courses and nine Honors classes in the Upper School. In addition, Lauren graduated as a member of six honor societies including the Art National Honor Society, Mu Alpha Theta Mathematics Honor Society and Spanish National Honor Society. Due to her academic success, Lauren received the “Faculty Prize” — an award granted to two students in the senior class, one female and one male, who during their tenure in the Upper School have demonstrated a deep respect for intellectual values and a love of learning — at Ranney’s 2012 Commencement Ceremony. Lauren was also selected as a Finalist in the 2012 National Merit Scholarship Program and as a nominee in the highly competitive New Jersey Scholars Program as well.
Outside of the classroom, Lauren’s extracurricular activities at Ranney ranged from being a member of the Horizons yearbook staff and participant in the Lower School’s internship program to a three-season varsity athlete on the school’s cross country, swimming and spring track and field teams. Aside from receiving the "Panther Pride Dedication & Commitment Award" at this spring’s Upper School Athletics Convocation ceremony, Lauren also earned the title of Most Valuable Swimmer during her time as co-captain of the 2011-2012 varsity swim team.
When not in the pool or helping out in the Lower School, Lauren could be found serving as an impactful and influential leader for the next generation of Jewish youth. As programming vice president to the National Federation of Temple Youth (NFTY) for two consecutive terms, Lauren’s responsibilities with the NFTY included planning and executing several events such as a Midnight Run and other food and clothing drives for the homeless, and conducting visits to the elderly. Additional temple youth activities completed by Lauren while in high school included the following: participation in the Urban Mitzvah Corps, where Lauren served as a camp counselor for children and adults with developmental disabilities, and volunteering at Elijah’s Promise — a soup kitchen in New Brunswick, New Jersey. “No matter whether she was catering to a client’s humanity, chopping zucchini, or mopping the kitchen floor, it was clear through her actions that Lauren wanted to make positive changes,” said one volunteer at Elijah’s Promise.
According to Lauren, these experiences have enriched her life, allowing her to reach out and discover a whole new community, while also developing leadership skills and making close friends. Now a student at Dartmouth College, Lauren will continue to serve as a true example of what one person can accomplish if motivated enough to succeed. She will receive her Golden Osprey Aspiring Youth Award at an annual dinner reception held at Spring Lake Manor in Spring Lake, New Jersey on October 18, 2012.
