Ranney Varsity Girls Tennis Wins Division Title

As one of the most acclaimed athletic programs at Ranney, the varsity girls’ tennis team began the 2012 fall season with the goal of continuing their winning tradition as they entered the Shore Conference “B Central”. After winning four consecutive NJSIAA Non-Public B South Championships, Head Coach Cristal Contrera recognized that in order to continue the success of the program, she would have to replace a few key seniors from last year’s team. “With a whole new line-up this season, I am extremely happy with the dedication, commitment, determination, and sportsmanship that the girls brought to the team and to the game of tennis,” said Coach Contrera.

The varsity team currently holds an outstanding record of 10 wins and 4 losses. The girls worked rigorously to improve their individual skills and set their own personal goals to strive for throughout the season. Although these goals varied from player to player, one goal remained the same for the entire team: to capture the Division Championship. The team persevered throughout the three-day competition and defeated Division powerhouse Point Pleasant Beach High School with two 3-2 victories and were crowned the 2012 Division Champions. These challenging matches demonstrated the strong mentality and relentless drive of these scholar-athletes.

“I am very proud of these young ladies and their coach for all they have accomplished this season,” said Director of Athletics, Tom Moriau. “They are a well-coached team with great skills and display a tremendous amount of pride and enthusiasm. They have certainly made the entire Ranney community proud.”

Although the fall sports season is coming to a close, this young team has an enormous amount of potential for the future. With consistent and well-rounded players across the board, each player had their time to shine this season and learned the true meaning of teamwork along the way. “As a coach it is great to see the support and team spirit they have for each other on and off the court. Being in the Shore Conference for the first year and winning the Division Championship is terrific for our program and the girls. It is something that they really wanted to achieve,” said Coach Contrera.

This year’s Varsity roster consisted of seniors Rachel Burstiner ’13 (Holmdel), Leah Chaise ’13 (Morganville) and Victoria Renner ’13 (Belmar); junior Giulia DiGuglielmo ’14 (Eatontown); sophomores Pauline Braka ’15 (Eatontown), Kristen Guyler ’15 (Marlboro), Gabriella Mahoney ’15 (Colts Neck) and Sabrina Park ’15 (Colts Neck); and freshmen Skylar Bradley ’16 (Brielle) and Rachel Patel ’16 (Morganville). With a number of starters returning next year and a strong junior varsity program, the future looks bright for the Ranney School tennis program.
