HEAD OF SCHOOL UPDATE - REOPEN NOV.6

Dear Ranney families,

The last few days have been very challenging for all of us. The leadership team at Ranney is fully committed to helping you and your families during this trying time. Our primary concern is that all Ranney families in our community, including those of our students, faculty, staff and administration, begin a safe and strong recovery from the devastation of Hurricane Sandy. Reopening school offers the comfort of routine as well as the safety and warmth that our school and community can provide to children and their families. Barring any unusual circumstances, Ranney School will reopen starting on Tuesday, November 6.

All power has been restored on the Ranney campus, and preparations are being made in respect to food, communication and transportation services. The Borough of Tinton Falls has encouraged us to open as soon as it is feasible. The Borough has carefully assessed local roadways and detours, and assures us that travel to and from campus should be safe.

Our operations team has assessed local bus transportation and realizes the difficulties ahead for towns hardest hit by the storm. Families will be encouraged to support each other and assist with car pooling and other arrangements until full service is restored; however, those families impacted most severely may find it unsafe to return to school. We encourage those families to stay at home until they can safely return to school. Faculty will contact families to check on the status of their students and offer assistance with school work.

Because so many have been affected by the storm, we know it may not be possible for some of our students to return this week. If this is the case, please contact me so we know that you and your family are safe. We can help prepare for your transition back to school when you are ready.

The facilities on the Ranney campus are open to anyone in the community. Services available include a washer/dryer, showers, locker rooms, clean towels, soap, charging stations for electronic devices such as cell phones, laptop computers with Internet access, as well as bottled water, food, blankets, heated conference rooms and other necessities. We want to make the next few days as accommodating and comforting for our community as possible during this difficult time.

The school has opened a message center on the home page of the Ranney website http://www.ranneyschool.org/hurricanesandy for members of the school community to leave updated contact information as well as messages of need, care and concern. The school's leadership team will be reviewing these messages throughout each day and will be reaching out to all members of the community in response to your specific needs.

Finally, please know the leadership team and the RSPA will be meeting on Tuesday to develop outreach plans which will be communicated to all families promptly. Do not be concerned this week about time-sensitive issues such as report cards, parent-teacher conferences, athletic events or scheduled events and plays –all will be postponed until we get through this emergency period. Members of the senior class will receive a separate important communication regarding extended college application deadlines from the Upper School. The dress code will also be suspended during this time period until further notice.

Ranney School wishes all of our students, families, faculty, staff and administration well and we especially look forward to embracing the community upon our return on Tuesday. Please share this message with families that may not have power, cell phone or email access. The first few days back to school will be a period of adjustment for everyone as we adjust to the circumstances. It is possible that some grades and classes will be grouped together, depending on the number of returning children. In addition, with substitutes and administrative support in classes as needed, we will work collaboratively to push forward and make the best of the circumstances. Note that Friday will be a regular school day – school will be open and parent-teacher conferences will be postponed to a later date.

Should you need immediate assistance before Tuesday, please contact me at lsykoff@myranney.org or on my cell at 732-245-0855.

With sincere thoughts, warm wishes and prayers,

Lawrence S. Sykoff
