Ranney to Host 19th Annual Panther Classic Basketball Tournament

The Ranney School Athletic Department will kick off the New Year with the 19th Annual Panther Classic Basketball Tournament. On Friday, January 11th and Saturday, January 12th, Ranney School varsity basketball teams will host local competition in the Gerhard Pavilion for Athletics. Over the years, the Tournament has showcased many talented high school basketball players to supportive parents, athletes and coaches and members of our local community.

The Tournament started in 1994 as a way to bring teams of equal skill level together for spirited competition. In the first year a total of eight teams competed, including four boys’ teams and four girls’ teams. This year, the Panthers will continue this traditional format, hosting NJ United Christian, Doane Academy and Calvary Academy.

“Ranney School is grateful for all of the support over the many years that the Panther Classic has taken place,” said Director of Athletics and Head Varsity Girls’ Basketball Coach, Tom Moriau. “The Athletic Department looks forward to hosting this wonderful basketball tournament each year and we are so excited to welcome all of the participating teams and Panther fans back this year for this classic event.”

The varsity girls’ basketball team started off the season strong with wins against Mater Dei and Keansburg High School. After winning the past four Panther Classic Tournaments, the team is hoping to continue the tradition and bring home the title once again this year. The girls will start their pool play against Calvary Academy at 6:30 p.m. on Friday.

Coached by Tyler Schmelz, the varsity boys’ basketball team has been working hard all season to improve its record and will enter the Panther Classic fresh off a win against Koinonia Academy on Tuesday, January 8th where the team defeated the Seraphs 44-42. The boys will also face Calvary Academy in the first round on Friday at 8 p.m.

Through its Athletic Department, Ranney School extends a cordial welcome to the 2013 Panther Classic and wishes all participating teams the best of luck!
