Ranney Girls Capture 5th Straight Championship

Ranney School hosted its 19th Annual Panther Classic Basketball Tournament on Friday January 11 and Saturday January 12, 2013. The Panther Classic has become a spirited tradition at Ranney School since 1994.This year’s Panther Classic featured varsity boys’ and girls’ basketball teams from Ranney School, New Jersey United Christian Academy, Calvary Academy and Doane Academy.

The Ranney girls’ varsity basketball team captured their fifth straight championship while the Ranney boys’ varsity team fell to Doane Academy in finals, earning the runner-up trophy. With large attendance on both days of the tournament, fans were treated to some outstanding basketball and exceptional talent.

In the opening game on Friday evening in front of one of the largest crowds to have gathered in the Gerhard Pavilion for Athletics, the Lady Panthers used an 11-2 third quarter to pull off a 34-17 win against Calvary Academy. Sophomore Grace Wilgucki ‘15 scored 4 of her 8 points in the third quarter, while also collecting an impressive 10 rebounds and 4 steals throughout the game. Freshman Erin Kennedy ’16 played a huge role in Ranney’s win over Calvary Academy, scoring a game high 14 points.

On Saturday, the girls’ used their 17-2 lead in the first quarter to carry on momentum against Doane Academy in the finals. In the first quarter, Junior Carly Ansell ’14 scored 8 of her game high 14 points helping stretch the lead to 31-2 at halftime. Sophomore Grace Wilgucki ’15 once again collected 10 rebounds for the Panthers while also chipping in 12 points. Head Coach and Director of Athletics, Tom Moriau, feels that the win can be attributed to their tremendous team defense and relentless efforts. “The girls came out ready to play in the first half of the finals,” explained Coach Moriau. “This was the most solid 16 minutes of basketball we have played all year. I am very proud of them as we continuously look to improve each day in preparation for tournament time at the end of the season.”

Grace Wilgucki was named the Tournament’s Most Valuable Player for her outstanding play in both games. The 2013 Panther Classic All-Tournament Team consisted of: Carly Ansell (Ranney School), Erin Kennedy (Ranney School), Liz Silverstein (Calvary Academy), Leah Simpson (Doane Academy) and Zaniya Lewis (Doane Academy).

The Ranney boys’ varsity basketball team defeated Calvary Academy 51-28 in an exciting matchup on Friday night. Ranney outscored a depleted Calvary team 33-4 in the first half with a combined 18 points from Joe Esquivel-Murphy ’14 and Omar Hozayen ‘13, each contributing 9 points apiece to the score. Esquivel-Murphy led all scorers and finished with 16 points in the contest, while Hozayen filled the stat sheet with 10 points, 8 rebounds, 4 assists and 4 steals. James Geraghty ’16 also contributed 10 points and 4 rebounds, John Mejia ’15 added 7 points and 3 boards and Jesse Zucker ‘13 and Will Rotolo ’14 controlled the backcourt for Ranney with 4 assists and 4 steals with only 2 turnovers.

In the finals on Saturday, the Panthers fell to Doane Academy 54-28 after a hard fought battle. The Doane Academy Spartans started off strong with a 9-2 first quarter lead, while the Panthers struggled with their shots. The Spartans increased their lead to 22-11 at halftime and continued to outscore the Panthers with a 21-8 run in the third quarter. Joe Esquivel-Murphy led the Panthers with 11 points and 8 rebounds as he scored a total of 27 points throughout the tournament. Freshman James Geraghty ‘16 finished with 5 points and 8 rebounds for the Panthers.

Joe Esquivel-Murphy and James Geraghty were named to the Panther Classic All-Tournament Team along with Tyler Carrington (Doane Academy), CJ Lane (Doane Academy) and Alan Baugh (NJ United Christian School). The Most Valuable Player of the Tournament was Davis Graham from Doane Academy.
