Ranney School Varsity Fencing Roundup

The Panthers’ Varsity Fencing season came to a strong conclusion with the NJSIAA Individual Championship on Sunday March 3, 2013. Freshman Nicole Vaiani (Wall) earned the silver medal in Girls’ Foil at the most prestigious individual event of the year. Nicole was among the 18 best New Jersey high school fencers who qualified. After two preliminary rounds, nine girls fenced for the title in the final round. Despite the long day of competition, Nicole showed poise and good concentration during the hard fought bouts. This 2nd place finish was the first NJSIAA podium for a female Ranney fencer.

At the NJSIAA District #2 Championship, 12 girls’ and 13 boys’ teams competed - mostly from northern Jersey - in a very strong field. Many of these fencers have been competing nationally for years. The young Ranney girls’ squad consisting of Emily Brodsky ’15, Niya Klayman ’16, Nicole Vaiani and Natalie Yang ’16, reached 3rd place with impressive and focused fencing. They qualified for the Squad Championship, where they finished 4th place among the best 16 Foil Squads across New Jersey.

On the day of the Prep State Championship, Ranney fencers were in top form and ready to compete. The team finished with two gold medals in Girls’ Foil, two silver medals from Natalie Yang and Jake Bassinder ’13 in Foil and Robert Odell ’16 finishing in 7th place.

The small Ranney team overcame adversity in numbers and proved to be strong. The future looks bright for the team, as they will continue to work hard and prepare to compete again in the future against the 52 New Jersey high schools that have varsity fencing programs.
