Ranney’s Summer TV Anchor Course Transforms Students into Reporters

Students in Ranney School’s “TV Newsroom Anchor” Summer Program spent the past two weeks delving into the world of broadcasting.

During the special summer study course, students learned about the television broadcasting industry, including its history and the making of major TV networks as well as the roles of those on and off camera, from writers and reporters to producers and anchors. They learned how to conduct a professional interview by carrying out various types of conversations with sources, including live interviews with Ranney day campers. While practicing weather and traffic reports, breaking news scenarios and on-the-scene reports, students also learned all about the do’s and don’ts of appearing on screen.

The course culminated with students spending three days planning, writing and recording their own short newscast. You can watch the 7-minute video located on the right side. You can also view a brief video in which a broadcasting student interviews some of Ranney’s summer drama students.

“It’s been amazing to watch the students grow over these two weeks. They started out being nervous and shy in front of the camera, and now, they can’t get enough of it,” said course instructors Angie Drakulich and Kelsey Semler, who work in Ranney’s Communications and Strategic Marketing Office.
