Ranney Seniors Recognized for Academic Excellence

This month, officials of the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC) announced the names of approximately 16,000 semifinalists in the 59th annual National Merit Scholarship Program. Five of 59 Ranney seniors Noah Goldstein*(Spring Lake Heights), Elinor Haney (Holmdel), Steven Jacobson (Colts Neck), Marc Owitz* (Morganville) and Hunter Pearl (Holmdel) are included in this number and have the opportunity to continue in the competition for the estimated 8,000 National Merit Scholarships that will be offered next Spring.

NMSC was established in 1955 specifically for this scholarship program. Along with its own funds, the nonprofit organization is also supported by approximately 440 business organizations and higher education institutions that share a common goal: encouraging the pursuit of excellence and honoring the nation’s scholastic champions.

Approximately 1.5 million juniors from more than 22,000 high schools entered the program after taking the 2012 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT). The semifinalists represent less than 1% of U.S. high school seniors and include the highest scoring entrants in each state. For consideration, Ranney’s semifinalists must submit a detailed scholarship application, with the student’s academic record, participation in school and community service activities, their demonstrated leadership abilities, employment and honors and awards they have received. The semifinalists also must be highly recommended by a high school official, write an essay and earn SAT scores that coincide with the student’s qualifying test results.

Out of the 16,000 semifinalists, 15,000 are expected to advance to the finalist level, which will be announced in February 2014. The winners of the National Merit Scholarships will be announced between April and July 2014, and will join more than 300,000 distinguished young people who have earned the National Merit Scholar title.

“We are proud of the dedication and hard work that Elinor, Steve, Marc, Hunter and Noah bring to their studies; they serve as an example to all Ranney students to set high goals, embrace high expectations, give your best and reach new highs in achievement,” said Head of Upper School Paul Zanowski.

Matt Elkwood, -- and Vincent Morano, all members of the Class of 2014, were also recognized for their academic promise, and although they will not continue in the competition for the National Merit Scholarships, they will receive letters of commendation and could potentially be eligible for special scholarships provided by corporate and business sponsors.

Seniors Alexandra Esquivel-Murphy* and Marc Owtiz* were recently named National Hispanic Scholars by The National Hispanic Recognition Program (NHRP). NHRP identifies nearly 5,000 outstanding Hispanic/Latino students each year. Although they do not provide a financial reward, being named is an important academic recognition. The program sends a list of all recognized students to subscribing colleges and universities that are particularly interested in academically outstanding seniors of Hispanic/Latino heritage. Qualification is based on critical reading, mathematics, and writing skill scores on the PSAT/NMSQT®. The cutoff scores vary each year by state and minimum grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 is also required.
