Ranney School fondly calls those families who have more than one generation of students attend the school “Legacy Families.” This year, there are nearly 20 such families on campus, and it seems the tradition has links to our Heads of School as well. For example, current Head of School Dr. John W. Griffith’s daughter, Claire, is a member of the Class of 2027. Former Head of School Margaret Mahon’s grandson, Ryan, is a member of the Class of 2023. And founding Head of School Russell G. Ranney’s son, Harland, was a member of the Class of 1965.
This past October, Harland and his sister, Suzanne R. Bass, along with their spouses, Mary Ann Ranney and Henry Bass, respectively, paid a visit to campus. The family had the opportunity to meet Dr. Griffith and to visit with a few Board and Cabinet members after taking a tour of the facilities. Members of the seventh- and eighth-grade chorus sang Jay Althouse’s “Like the Beat of a Drum” with Sarah Killian '18 on the piano, accompanied by Haley Bovino '19, before the family enjoyed a luncheon in RSPA Panther Hall.
William, the grandson of Mr. Russell Ranney, also participated in the campus tour, which was led by Admissions Ambassador and Student Council Vice President Elizabeth Roberts ’15. “I never had the chance to know my grandfather,” said 27-year-old William, “so seeing and hearing about the school gives me insight into who he was.” William has come to campus a few times before, and says he’s always amazed by the grounds. “The school is beautiful.”
Harland agreed. “My father would be thrilled with what the school has become,” he said. “We see so much student appreciation and caring about the upkeep of the buildings.” In addition to the newer buildings on campus, such as the Middle and Upper School Academic Complex, the diversity of sports offered and the variety of activities that take place in The Commons building—which Mr. Russell Ranney began construction on in 1986 just before his passing, Mr. Harland Ranney was also impressed with the focus that Ranney School places on student achievement.
“The school today is a testament to all the excellent work that followed with Margaret Mahon as Head of School as well as Dr. Sykoff,” said Mr. Harland Ranney. “You can see that it has been a tremendous group effort to carry out (my father’s) vision.”
Mrs. Bass, the daughter of Mr. Russell Ranney, agreed with her brother. “I’m always impressed to see how the school has grown and how it continues to develop and deepen in the quality of education it provides. My father would be very proud.”
Of interest, Mr. Russell Ranney founded Columns magazine in 1971. Named after the columns on the Annex Building, the annual magazine was meant to keep alumni in touch with one another as well as with the school community and to detail the strengths of their preparation at Ranney School for college. A New Legacy Family
Ranney welcomed the Paulus Family as a new legacy family this year. Nearly 20 years after graduating from Ranney School, Irene Bolante Paulus ‘96 and Daniel Paulus ’95 are returning to campus on a daily basis to bring their daughter, Isabella, to her first-grade class with Mrs. Linda Foster. In addition to Isabella—a member of the Class of 2025—Dan’s brother Tim Paulus also graduated from Ranney in 1997 as did his cousin Jamie Lugli in 1994. Irene’s twin brother Brian graduated from the school in 1996; he had Mrs. Foster as a teacher in the fourth grade. Ranney School interviewed these alums to talk about their fondest—and funniest—memories of attending Ranney, what it has been like to have so many family members attend the same school, and their hopes and dreams for their daughter’s experience as a next-generation Panther.
