On Wednesday, February 19, members of the Ranney School Varsity Girls’ Fencing team won the New Jersey Interscholastic Athletic Association (NJSIAA) Prep State Championship. The Girls’ Foil Squad consisting of Upper School students Nicole Vaiani ’16 (Wall), Olivia Eaddy ’17 (Wall) and juniors Madison Acker (Colts Neck) and Emily Brodsky (Morganville) worked together to bring home the gold. “The girls fenced with a lot of fighting spirit,” said Head Coach Agota Balot, who also coaches Ranney fencing camp during the summer. “With two new fencers on the foil squad, it was an outstanding result for the girls! They showed great team spirit during the entire day working together, helping each other with advice on and off the strip.”
Nicole Vaiani was also crowned the NJSIAA Individual Foil Champion, after she won three 10-touch bouts. After finishing in second place last year, this first place finish signifies her hard work and dedication. “As she competed for the gold medal, all 21 Ranney fencers from both the girls’ and boys’ teams surrounded the area and cheered beside her on the strip,” said Coach Balot. “It was a very nice show of camaraderie and support.” Nicole will continue to prepare for the Individual State Championship on March 3, which she earned after finishing in second place at the NJSIAA District 2 Championships. More about Fencing at Ranney School
Ranney students have the opportunity to begin fencing in the Lower School through Ranney Plus after-school programming at Atlantic Fencing Academy located in Tinton Falls, which is owned by Coach Balot. Atlantic Fencing Academy is also the location for Ranney’s Summer Programs fencing camp. The camp introduces the three Olympic weapons: foil, epee and saber. Campers who are new to the sport gain valuable instruction and guidance to become better fencers, while more advanced fencers have the opportunity to refine their technique, gain advice and have extended practice time to improve their skills. Each day consists of warm-up and skill work followed by challenging fencing games.
Directed by Coach Balot, the fencing camp focuses on teaching basic rules, footwork, distance, preparation for attack or defense and bouting techniques. Coach Balot is a former Hungarian Junior Team Champion with more than 25 years of fencing and personal training experience. Born in Budapest, Hungary, she is multilingual, trained in management, and is a certified personal trainer and former marathon runner. She has met fencers from all over the world and has had opportunities to bout with champions and fencing legends. The daughter of Magda Nyari, five time World Champion and Olympic Silver Medalist, Coach Balot has spent her entire life around the sport of fencing.
