Ranney School Names Bobby Malone Director of Athletics

Ranney School has named Mr. Bobby Malone as its Director of Athletics, reporting to Head of School Dr. John W. Griffith. Mr. Malone, Assistant Director of Athletics at The Peck School in Morristown, NJ since 2011, will assume this role at the start of the new school year on July 1, 2014. He will lead the Monmouth County independent day school’s Beginners (age 3) to grade 12 athletics and physical education program for approximately 820 students.

Ranney School commenced its search in January after naming Tom Moriau, Ranney School’s athletic director for 26 years, as its new alumni director. “After an extensive search process, we are delighted to have found in Bobby Malone a perfect fit for our culture and athletic programs. I am confident that Bobby will build on Tom Moriau’s achievements and bring Panther Athletics to an even higher level of commitment and success.” Dr. Griffith noted that finding a successor to build upon Mr. Moriau’s record of achievement involved the vital input of the entire school community. Mr. Malone, with his energy and enthusiasm, strong beliefs in character education and passion for teaching and coaching, emerged as the clear selection to address the key priorities of the school’s athletics program. He added that Mr. Malone brings to Ranney a diversity of experience as an educator, teacher and coach and a long record of athletic achievement that extends from his secondary education through his university undergraduate and graduate education.

As Assistant Athletic Director at The Peck School, Bobby excelled as a hands-on leader who managed various aspects of the athletic program, from athletic facilities maintenance of a 35,000 square foot athletic center to the creation of procedures, protocol and communication for the department. He also initiated the Peck Athletic Sports Symposium, a program inviting experts to campus to address parents and coaches about current issues in athletics. In addition to serving as head coach of the Boys Lacrosse Program and directing the school’s summer programs, Bobby teaches sixth and seventh grade science programs at The Peck School. The search committee noted that he clearly understands the challenges of balancing a quality athletic program with academics and shares a strong vision for the next phase of the school’s athletic program.

Mr. Malone holds a Master of Arts in Education Leadership, Management & Planning from Seton Hall University and a Bachelor of Science in Biological Science at The University of Tennessee, where he played lacrosse as a college athlete. A native of Oneida, New York, he graduated from The Mercersburg Academy, a boarding school in Pennsylvania with an outstanding reputation for the development of student athletes. Prior to The Peck School, he successfully held positions as a teacher and coach at Delbarton School, Cambridge Rindge & Latin, St. John’s Prep and Porter Gaud. He currently lives in Morristown with his wife Jaime, a counselor and adjunct instructor at Fairleigh Dickinson University, and their sons, two-year-old Reilly and Patrick, and newborn Colin.

Since its establishment in 1960, Ranney School has embraced the belief that healthy and active bodies lead to healthy and strong minds and has celebrated the emergence of the scholar-athlete. The school currently has 25 Upper School interscholastic athletic teams, 14 Middle School interscholastic teams and seven club sports. Ranney’s athletic facility, the Gerhard Pavilion for Athletics, has expanded in recent years to include a weight center, training room, digital timing systems in its Aquatic Center. Outside of this facility, the school maintains the Guidone Track and Karagiankis field and playing fields that span nearly half of the school’s acreage and include soccer and baseball fields and a five-court Kelly Tennis Center. Ranney entered the Shore Conference in 2011.
