Jr. Tri-M Music Honor Society Celebrates New and Existing Members

On May 13, Ranney’s Middle School students, parents, administration and faculty joined together in RSPA Panther Hall to celebrate the induction of 11 new members into the Junior Tri-M® Music Honor Society Chapter 4410. As the only honor society offered to Middle School students, Jr. Tri-M® recognizes those scholars—in grades six through eight—who possess qualities of leadership, service and, most importantly, musicianship. To qualify for membership, students must be actively enrolled in Middle School Band, Chorus or Orchestra and must meet national academic and musicianship guidelines. To achieve continuing membership, a service requirement is added, so that members may serve as examples of leadership and demonstrate what it means to be honorable.

Junior Tri-M® President Carmine Mastrokostas ’18 began the 10th Annual Ceremony with the Pledge of Allegiance, followed by opening remarks from Head of School Dr. John Griffith. “Music opens up pathways to success,” said Dr. Griffith. “Our goal at Ranney is to continue the growth of music and the arts. I wish all new and existing members of the Jr. Tri-M continued success throughout their time at Ranney, and after, in college and beyond.”

Following his remarks, Chapter Officers Sarah Killian ’18 (Secretary/Historian) and Laura Lehrfeld ’18 (Treasurer) joined Carmine to explain the meaning of “Tri-M”—Modern Music Masters—to the audience and introduced Middle School Dean of Students David Ketcham to induct the new members: Dylan Ajello ’20, Isabella DelNegro ’19, Olivia Emma ’20, Luke Grover ’18, Thomas Jensen ’20, Alexis Karlin ’20, Jane Mallach ’20, Jatin Nayyar ’20, Kathryn Peardon ’20, Aidan Smires ’20 and Shrish Vaidyaselvan ’20.

Mr. Kevin Cotter, Band Director, and All-School Orchestra Director Dr. Dorothy Sobieski then recognized continuing members of the Jr.Tri-M® Music Honor Society: Two-year members: Paul Cantave ’19, Gianna Cappillo ’19, Mikayla DeSaye ’19, Sathya Edamadaka ’19, Jacob Egol ’19, Shayna Field ’19, Shana Fitzmaurice ’19, Alexandra Greenberg ’19, Matthew Hamelsky ’19, Ava Jacoby ’19, Lindsey Maher ’19, Ariana Mangano ’19, Robert Maris ’19, Samantha Maris ’19, Louie Mastrokostas ’18, Leah Nawy ’19, Himani Nayyar ’19, Aaryan Raval ’19, Cole Redman ’19, Samantha Riebesell ’19, Mackenzie Schultz ’19 and Catherine Vucetic ’19; and Three-year members: Jared Cohen ’18, Anisha Gupta ’18, Paul Jensen ’18, Sarah Killian, Laura Lehrfeld and Carmine Mastrokostas.

After all members recited the traditional membership pledge, Jr. Tri-M® Chapter Advisor and Middle School Choral and General Music teacher Lillianne Torrente presented several students with awards. The Tri-M® Outstanding Service Award, which distinguishes those who have logged more than 25 hours of service this year and demonstrate exceptional commitment to working with or on behalf of others, willingly and selflessly, was presented to the following 10 members: Gianna Cappillo, Jared Cohen, Mikayla DeSaye, Shayna Field, Shana Fitzmaurice, Sarah Killian, Carmine Mastrokostas, Himani Nayyar, Leah Nawy and Mackenzie Schultz.

Mrs. Torrente then presented three students with Master Musicianship Awards, which has been given only four times in the past 9 years to a student who excels in music and demonstrates superior knowledge of music theory, achieves a measurable level of success in musical performance and willingly shares their musical skills with the Ranney community. The award was presented to Sathya Edamadaka, Carmine Mastrokostas and Sarah Killian.

To conclude the induction and awards ceremony, the Middle School Orchestra performed Liebesleid (Love’s Sorrow) by Fritz Kreislerr, arranged by Merle Isaac.
