The Class of 2026 welcomed parents, family and friends to RSPA Panther Hall on June 9 for the Kindergarten “Moving Up” Ceremony. In welcoming everyone, Early Childhood Director Stephanie Katzman spoke fondly about the 35 students who make up the classes of Mrs. Martinez, Mrs. Pierz and Mrs. Fischer.
Students from Mrs. Martinez’s class recited poems, “Hello, Goodbye” and “Here I Come.” Mrs. Pierz’s class then presented an acrostic poem that they wrote and illustrated themselves with each beginner letter spelling out “Kindergarten.” Mrs. Fischer’s class also shared a poem titled “Twelve Little Caterpillars.”
This year, Kindergarten students were introduced to French, Mandarin Chinese and Spanish through music and singing. To share what they learned, the students performed “Alouette” in French, “I Love My Family” in Chinese and “Los Grandes Elefante” in Spanish under the direction of Madame Rosenthal, Laoshi Zhang and Senora Cordero, respectively.
Before introducing the final musical performances of the day, Lower School Music and Chorus teacher Lisa Geene spoke about the rich curriculum the students experienced this year. The Kindergarten students have, for example, learned to distinguish between their speaking and singing voices; learned the basic elements of music such as rhythm, pitch, dynamics and tempo; and explored different types of music through the “Composer of the Month” program, where they have listened to famous composers such as Beethoven and Mozart. Students have also studied the different instrument families and performed songs with narration at Grandparents’ and Friends’ Day as well as Parents’ Day.
The students then performed “Look How Far We’ve Come” and “This is My Time” as they celebrated all they have accomplished this year. In the ceremony’s closing, Dr. Andrea Danial, who will be the new Head of Lower School in July, addressed the audience. “One of the things we don’t remember is the miraculous nature of this age,” she said. “They are now ready to move up to the Lower School. They are going to learn more, use what they have learned and continue to have fun.”
At the conclusion of the ceremony, Mrs. Fischer and Head of School Dr. John Griffith acknowledged Mrs. Katzman in her final school year with Ranney for all of her hard work and dedication. After a standing ovation, the members of the Class of 2026 exited Panther Hall hand-in-hand with fifth-grade students. Their older fifth-grade peers, the Class of 2021, will “Cross the Lawn” from the Lower School to the Middle School on June 10.
