Varsity Girls’ Tennis Wins First Round of Conference Tournament

Ranney’s Varsity Girls’ Tennis team defeated Toms River East in the first round of the Shore Conference Tournament on Friday, September 19th. Although they were ranked 20th going into the tournament, the Panthers and Head Coach Christel Contrera did not let the rankings intimidate them. “Going into the tournament and playing Toms River East, the 13th seed, I assured the girls that we could beat this team,” said Coach Contrera. “Both of our teams had similar scores against Southern Regional. I told the girls on the bus that if they want it they have to go out and put their hearts into the match.”

The first win came from 1st Doubles Team, Rachel Patel ’16 and Emma Nisbet ’18 (6-1, 6-1), followed by freshman third singles player Nikki Goldwert, who won 6-3 and 6-1. The final win came from seniors Pauline Braka and Ilayda Takil who defeated their competitors 6-1 and 7-6. “The expressions on the girls’ faces were priceless,” added Coach Contrera. “They were so excited they won.”

The Panthers will face Freehold Borough High School on Tuesday, September 23 at 3:30 p.m. The winner of the match will advance to the next round on September 29th, taking on the winner of the Wall Township High School v.s. Manasquan High School match.
