Countdown to Ranney’s Homecoming: Hall of Fame Spotlight

As we countdown to the 2014 Homecoming and Fall Festival celebration—just three weeks away—Ranney School is spotlighting its distinguished alumni, athletes and faculty. Mrs. Margaret Mahon served Ranney School nearly three decades, serving first as a valuable member of the college guidance team in 1966. She went on to work as a teacher, faculty supervisor, principal of the Lower and Middle Schools, admissions director, and assistant headmaster under Mr. Russell G. Ranney before taking over the reins in 1987 as Ranney’s second Head of School. Recognizing the importance of her headship position and the timing of her leadership imperative, Mrs. Mahon expertly advanced the school’s reputation within local, regional and state professional communities during her six-year tenure as Head of School.

In this essential time of growth, Ranney School became a member of the National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS), founded the Ranney School Parents’ Association (RSPA) and expanded co-curricular programming to include International Day, Spirit Day and afterschool activities. As a leader, Mrs. Mahon placed students and faculty alike at the center of her mission to continue Mr. Ranney’s legacy and to safeguard the school’s expanding reputation for academic excellence. Mrs. Mahon was instrumental in the school’s continued growth, leading its transformation into one of the region’s finest college-preparatory institutions before her retirement in 1993. Today, her legacy continues—Mrs. Mahon’s grandson, Ryan, is a member of the Class of 2023. She visits campus often for major events, including the fall 2013 Installation of Ranney’s fourth Headmaster, Dr. John W. Griffith.

Mrs. Mahon is being honored with Ranney’s new Distinguished Faculty Award on the evening of October 18 as part of the Panther Hall of Fame inductee ceremony and annual alumni reception. Learn more about this year’s Hall of Fame inductees here.
