Ranney’s fall sports teams had a historic season, capturing championships, big wins and making their mark on the Shore Conference.TennisThe Varsity Girls’ Tennis team, led by Coach Christel Contrera, continued their regular season success into the post-season. The Panthers claimed the Shore Conference “B Central” Division Championship, sharing the crown with St. Rose. The doubles team of Anisha Gupta ’18 (Ocean) and Emma Nisbet ’18 (Monmouth Beach) defeated the #1 seeded team from Princeton Day School in the NJISAA Prep B Tournament and advanced all the way to the finals, earning 2nd place in the state. With more than 20 girls on the JV Girls’ Tennis team, Coach Heidi Bonney rotated doubles teams and singles players for matches so that each girl would have a chance to play in multiple matches and gain experience on the court. The team had a successful season with a final record of 7-2.
The Middle School Girls’ Tennis team, led by Barbara Bongiovanni and Anna Lazic, finished the season with an undefeated record of 7-0.
SoccerThe Ranney School Varsity Boys’ Soccer team, coached by Mike Ling and Eric Hurd, showed its strength during conference play, finishing 6-7-1 in the “B Central” Division and 6-10-2 overall. Shane Keenan ’17 (Tinton Falls) led the Panthers on offense with 6 goals and 8 assists. Goalie Noah Ayers ’17 (Allenhurst) recorded 160 saves in 17 games and senior captains Jacob Palecki (Toms River) and Youssef Awad (Holmdel) led the team’s defense that recorded four shutouts against division competition.
The Middle School Boys’ Soccer Blue team finished the season with a record of 1-9-2. Coached by Daniel Szymanski, the team improved with each game. Despite having fewer games this season, the Middle School Boys’ White team, coached by Dennis Noonan, continued to work hard and finished with a record of 3-2.
The Varsity Girls’ Soccer team finished the season with a 5-11 record. Coached by Ian McNamara and assisted by Katie Popowych, the team had notable wins against New Brunswick, Villa Victoria and Calvary Christian and close games with fellow Shore Conference members. Freshman Abigail Boyan (Spring Lake) scored 14 goals during her first varsity season, senior Samantha Schaaff (West Long Branch) completed the season with a total of 97 saves as goalie and senior Grace Wilgucki (Freehold) had 7 goals.
Finishing with a conference record of 6-5-0, the Middle School Girls’ Soccer team, coached by Katie Popowych and Kim Harris, qualified for the MCISSL playoffs. With numerous shutouts throughout the season led by keeper Jenna Wilen ’20 (Colts Neck) and teamwork, the Panthers had an unforgettable season. Maggie Rustico ’19 (Highlands) was selected to represent Ranney and the American Conference at the MCISSL All-Star Game in which she scored two goals.
Field Hockey
The Varsity Girls’ Field Hockey team, coached by Eileen McEnery and Kendall Petschauer earned a spot in the Shore Conference tournament for the first time. After a 3-0 loss to Long Branch in the first round, the lady Panthers earned a #4 seed and first-ever home playoff game in the NJISAA Prep B tournament. The team defeated Princeton Day School 1-0 after a goal in overtime from captain Alexandra Natsis ’15 (Fair Haven) and advanced to the semifinals against Morristown-Beard School, where they were defeated by the #1 seed 5-0, making their final record 8-7-2.
The Middle School Field Hockey team competed in four games this season. Despite a 1-3 record, the Panthers and Coach Charleen Artese remained positive and have high hopes for next season.
Cross Country
Coached by Noel Delgado, the Varsity Boys’ and Girls’ Cross Country teams had a very good season, including multiple new personal records. The boys' team ended the season with a record of 3-3. All runners dropped their overall 5k times, with four runners (juniors Jonathan Kelly (Wall), Vasilios Nicholas (Holmdel), Dean Parker (Toms River) and sophomore Liam Fitzmaurice (Spring Lake)) setting new personal race times at Holmdel Park, which is one of the toughest and hilliest cross country courses in the state. The team’s fastest time of the season was set by Liam (18:57), who broke 19 minutes for the first time in his running career! Although the girls’ team ended the season at 1-4 due to several injuries, the team still had a number of successes. Senior Hailey Maher (Colts Neck) ran her best time ever at Holmdel Park (23:56) and freshman Laura Lehrfeld (Sea Girt) dropped her 5k time by 0.5 minutes.
The Middle School Cross Country team, led by Coach Madeleine McCarthy, had a tremendous season with the girls’ team finishing 2nd place overall in the league with a record of 8-2. Jane Mallach ’20 (Rumson) placed 14th and Shana Fitzmaurice ’19 (Spring Lake) placed 16th at the New Jersey Middle School State Championships held at Great Adventure. The girls' team placed 2nd at the Meet of Champions with individual finishes from Jane Mallach (2nd), Shana Fitzmaurice (7th) and Mia Glass ’19 (Rumson) (17th). To close out the season, the team won the Gill St. Bernard’s School Great Pumpkin Run with individual finishes from Jane Mallach (2nd), Shana Fitzmaurice (3rd) and Mia Glass (4th). The boys’ team had a very solid showing, finishing in 8th place out of 16 teams and an individual result of 8th place for Scottie Lewis ’19 (Hazlet). The boys’ final season record was 2-5.
Equestrian Club
Ranney School’s Equestrian Club, established in October 2012, supports several scholar-athlete riders who train outside of school—and they are making remarkable headway in the sport. In September, Ashleigh Conroy-Zugel ’16 (Holmdel) and Sophia Calve ’16 (Oceanport) competed internationally at the junior level Dressage at Devon competition in Pennsylvania (Ashleigh has been invited to participate in the Emerging Dressage Athlete Program’s Fourth Annual Robert Dover Horsemastership Clinic, which is led and judged by several Olympians, taking place this coming January in Florida). Also in September, Carlie Taurosa ’18 (Allenwood) received a Reserve Champion award at the Marshall and Sterling Medal Finals in the Children’s Hunter and Equitation Division. In October, Claudia Payor ’15 (Atlantic Highlands) and Adele McKenna ’15 (Rumson) qualified to compete in the national ASPCA MacLay Finals, a national jumping championship that took place in Kentucky. The girls represented the Northeast region, among other riders. At the end of the season, senior Adele McKenna (Rumson) accepted an early decision offer and partial scholarship to compete on Texas A&M University’s Division I Equestrian team beginning next fall. Texas A&M’s riding program currently ranks 5th in the nation.
