On October 30, 2014, nine students were inducted into the Russell G. Ranney Chapter of the National Honor Society (NHS) and five were inducted into the National Chinese Honor Society (NCHS). The ceremony took place in RSPA Panther Hall with Head of School Dr. John W. Griffith, Upper School Head Paul Zanowski, NHS Advisor Kate Greenberg and NCHS Advisor Matt Allen. Upper School students and inductees’ families attended as well.
New National Honor Society inductees include seniors: Sara Abdelbarry, Madison Acker, Krishawna Goins, William Held, Jacqueline Lee, Kylie Medlin, Sohum Pandey, Claudia Payor and Carl Rivera. Chinese National Honor Society inductees include upperclassmen: Sabrina Boxer ’15, Jerome Cohen ’16, Ryan Eaddy ’15, Rose Maisner ’15 and William Zheng ’17.
This is the first time Ranney School has had a Chinese Honor Society chapter. Its establishment was inspired by Mandarin Chinese student Sabrina Boxer, who is serving as the chapter’s first co-president with fellow senior Rose Maisner. The National Chinese Honor Society was established in the United States in November 1993 to recognize those accomplished high school students who study Chinese as a world language. The society is a scholastic organization that promotes and recognizes students with good citizenship, leadership and deeds of community service. Applicants must be full time high school students (grades 9 – 12) who have studied Chinese for four semesters in high school with an average of A- (90) or higher. A sophomore who has started at the two upper levels of Chinese as a freshman may be considered for eligibility as well. Today’s founding inductees will help to induct a next group of Ranney students in spring 2015.
The National Honor Society is the nation’s premier organization established to recognize outstanding high school students. More than just an honor roll, NHS serves to honor those students who have demonstrated excellence in the areas of scholarship, leadership, service and character. These characteristics have been associated with membership in the organization since its beginnings in 1921.
Today’s NHS induction was led by current officers and seniors: Hailey Maher (Co-President), Jacob Palecki (Co-President), Avani Bhatnagar (Co-Vice President), Raymond Moser (Co-Vice President), Francesca Fischer (Secretary) and Rachel Lasko (Treasurer).
Ranney inducts students into its Russell G. Ranney chapter of NHS each fall and each spring.
