Panther Sports Update

Dear Members of the Ranney Community,

It is hard to believe that the November edition of the Athletic eNewsletter is already here! As we pause to reflect upon the start of the school year, it must be mentioned that the month of October was both historic and monumental for Panther Athletics.

On October 17, a new tradition was established at Ranney School: Blue and White Night. This school-spirit packed night helped to kick off the 2014 Homecoming Weekend with the first-ever outdoor night game in Ranney history. It was an incredible event, featuring our Varsity Boys' Soccer victory, 3-2, over Keyport High School. Ranney's finest were on display, not only on the playing field, but also as part of the evening's festivities. In addition to the school's Jazz Band, led by Mr. John Propper, Carmine Mastrokostas '18 (Tinton Falls) started the evening with a rousing rendition of the National Anthem and Jacquie Lee '15 (Colts Neck) entertained the crowd of more than 500 during halftime. The remainder of Homecoming was full of athletic contests, including a Varsity Girls' Soccer game and varsity and junior varsity tennis matches against Rutgers Prep.

The Varsity Girls' Tennis team, led by Coach Contrera, continued to serve and volley its way into the post-season. The team lost a very hard fought match, 3-2, in the first round of the NJSIAA tournament to Holy Spirit. Later in the same week, the team claimed the Shore Conference "B Central" Division Championship, sharing the crown with rival St. Rose. The team then traveled to Wardlaw-Hartridge School in Edison, NJ, for the NJISAA Prep B tournament. The doubles team of Anisha Gupta '18 (Ocean) and Emma Nisbet '18 (Monmouth Beach) defeated the #1 seeded team from Princeton Day School and advanced all the way to the finals, earning second place in the state! Congratulations to the entire tennis team for an outstanding season.

The Varsity Girls' Field Hockey team had the best October in the program's history, earning entry into the Shore Conference tournament for the first time. The road to the tournament was highlighted by "must wins" over divisional foes Keyport and Henry Hudson high schools. After avenging early season losses to both schools, the team earned entry into the tournament and traveled to Long Branch to compete during Homecoming weekend. After holding Long Branch scoreless for 49 minutes, the defense finally gave in and the team lost 3-0. The lady Panthers also earned a #4 seed and first-ever home playoff game in the NJISAA Prep B tournament.

Neither rain, nor wind, nor Princeton Day School beat the team; The Panthers won the game despite a terrible nor'easter, on a penalty shot by senior Alexandra Natsis (Fair Haven) with 2 minutes remaining in overtime. The team traveled to Morristown to take on #1 seeded Morristown-Beard School at the end of October, playing a great game, supported by Ranney fans that made the trip aboard a spirit bus up to Morris County. Unfortunately, the Crimson proved to be the stronger squad and Ranney lost 5-0. It was a truly amazing season for Coach McEnery's squad. Congratulations on a wonderful season!

The Middle School athletic program also had an impressive month. The girls' tennis team, led by Coach Bongiovanni, finished the season with an impressive 7-0 record after their final match against Stuart Country Day School last week. The team will no doubt continue to have success with this talented group of players as they move up into the varsity position in the coming years.

The Middle School Girls' Soccer team, led by Coaches Harris and Popowych, qualified for the MCISSL playoffs by earning victories in must-win late season league games. The team traveled to Manalapan-Englishtown Middle School on October 24, played extremely hard, but fell to the higher seeded team.

The Middle School Cross Country team, led by Coach McCarthy, had a tremendous season, highlighted by three home meets and strong finishes at championship meets around the state. Jane Mallach '20 (Rumson) placed 14th and Shana Fitzmaurice '19 (Spring Lake) placed 16th at the New Jersey Middle School State Championships held at Great Adventure. The girls' team placed second at the league Meet of Champions held at Buck Mills Park with individual finishes of 2nd, Jane Mallach; 7th, Shana Fitzmaurice; and 17th, Mia Glass '19 (Rumson). To close out the season, the team won the Gill St. Bernard's School Pumpkin Run with individual finishes of 2nd, Jane Mallach; 3rd, Shana Fitzmaurice; and 4th, Mia Glass. The boys' team had a very solid showing, coming in 8th place out of 16 teams and an individual result of 8th place for Scottie Lewis '19 (Hazlet).
