Ranney School hosted two successful robotics tournaments on December 6, 2014, with about 400 students and teachers from area schools in attendance. Middle and Upper School students won five trophies in all and three Middle School teams have qualified to compete in the New Jersey state competition on December 13.
Five Ranney Middle School teams competed in the VEX IQ tournament, which is designed for elementary and Middle School students through 7th grade. All five teams finished in the top 10 out of 22 robots. The B Team (Shrish Vaidyaselvan ’20 and Jatin Nayyar ’20) and C Team (Trey Dodge ’20 and Nicholas Sakson ’20) came in first and second place, respectively.
Ranney students in grades 8 through 12 grade also competed on campus December 6 as part of the VEX Robotics Competition (VRC) Tournament, which included a total of 27 teams. Six of Ranney’s eight robots finished in the top 10. Our B Team (Brandon Gioggia’16, Coleen Ross ‘15, Grant Barthelmes ‘17 and Ava Papetti ‘15) won the tournament and our D Team (Vasilios Nicholas ‘16, Andrew Denton ‘18, Jack Fink ‘16 and Jacob Guss ‘18) and J Team (Dana Schioppo ‘17, William Zheng ‘17, and Michael Zheng ‘18) were finalists.
The VRC B Team also won the Driving Skills Challenge and an Amaze Award for overall quality. The judges called the team’s robot a “beast of a robot.” The VRC J Team won a Build Award for a solidly crafted robot.
“It was an amazing day and I couldn't have pulled it off without tons of help from student and parent volunteers,” says Computer Science Teacher Chiara Shah, who advises Ranney Robotics with assistance from Lower School teachers Maureen Wood and Judy Salisbury.
Participating in the state VEX IQ competition in South Orange on December 13 will be our VEX IQ B and C teams, noted above, as well as our VEX IQ A Team, which includes James Glover ’21 and Ava Floyd ’21; this team qualified for states after the Nov. 22, 2014, VEX IQ tournament.
