Audra Smires ’16 (Freehold) came in second in both of her skill events—the 50 Freestyle and 100 Freestyle—at the 2015 Shore Conference Tournament Girls’ Swim Championship held January 31. She qualified for the Shore Conference after placing 2nd in the same two events at the
Monmouth County Swim Championship in mid-January. This is the first time a Ranney student has achieved such a ranking at the Shore Conference swim tournament. Smires’ time in the 50 Freestyle was 24.25 and her time in the 100 Freestyle was 53.19.
A member of the Ranney Varsity Swim team, Smires holds nearly all of the Middle and Upper School swim records (see photos of the record boards at right).
Says Swim Coach and Ranney Aquatic Director Emmett Walling, "Audra raises the bar for all other swimmers. She is a versatile swimmer and will be competing in every championship meet this season."
Smires competed at the Shore tournament with her teammates as well as swimmers from other schools in the “B Central” division, including Manasquan, St. Rose, Red Bank Catholic, Donovan Catholic, Freehold Township and Colts Neck.
“I am very proud to be representing Ranney School this swim season,” said Smires. “While it was a great honor to place 2nd in all of my individual events, it was also a humbling experience. I had some tough competition and we all raced our hearts out. I have trained and practiced since I was six years old in order to swim at this level. I have made many sacrifices both in and out of the pool and it has been extremely rewarding to know that all my hard work can pay off, and that on some days, my best is good enough to win a silver medal.”
Smires added that she’s looking forward to “proudly wearing my Ranney cap” when she races at the NJISAA Championship Meet at Lawrenceville School and the Meet of Champions at Gloucester County Institute of Technology this month. “To the younger swimmers, I would like to say that a key part of succeeding in swimming is how you approach everything mentally. No matter what swimming brings you right at that moment, you have to keep a positive attitude. Even through the hardest of practices and the toughest parts of the season, it is crucial that you do not give up, whatever you do. Because when you finally make it through those hard times, the rewards will be great.”
Overall, the Ranney Girls’ Varsity Swim Team earned 17th place at the meet, scoring 50 points. Meet point scoring results were as follows:
200 Medley Relay – 14th place, time 2:03.82: Abigail Boyan ’18 (Spring Lake), Laura Lehrfeld ’18 (Sea Girt), Audra Smires, Kate Crilly ’16 (Shrewsbury)
