Student Artists Earn Scholastic Awards

Three Ranney student artists have earned eight 2015 Scholastic Art & Writing Awards.
Three Ranney student artists have earned eight 2015 Scholastic Art & Writing Awards. Senior Caitlin Mullally (Red Bank) received the Silver Key award for her painting and drawing portfolio (only seniors can submit a portfolio) and an Honorable Mention for one of her drawings. Junior Megan Singh (Colts Neck) received a Gold Key, Silver Key and two Honorable Mentions for her photography. Junior Erica Palmieri (Marlboro) received two Honorable Mentions for her photography. Photos of the works are posted at right.

Megan’s winning photos were taken in India. “I used photos from my trip because they were unique and depicted landscapes different from those in New Jersey,” she says. Megan used landmarks as inspiration, including the Rock Garden, the Taj Mahal and the Fatehpur Sikri. “In my photos, I like to incorporate an element of color and texture, using those as the basic guidelines,” she adds. Of note, as a Ranney communications intern, Megan’s photography has appeared on the Ranney website.

The winners will attend a February 12 awards ceremony at the Montclair Art Museum and have select pieces on exhibit at the museum through March 22, 2015. As a Gold Key recipient, Singh’s photo is moving on to national adjudication. “I am gratified that my Gold & Silver Key photos are going to be displayed in the Montclair Art Museum,” says Megan.

The Scholastic awards program, established in 1923 and presented by The Alliance for Young Artists & Writers to recognize the vision, ingenuity and talent of our nation’s youth, aims to provide opportunities to celebrate creative teens. Ranney students competed against than 3,700 original works submitted by students across the region in public, private and home schools. Students’ submissions were judged blindly by leaders in the visual and literary arts.

Alumni of the awards include many famous artists, including Andy Warhol, Philip Pearlstein, Cy Twombly, Robert Indiana, Kay WalkingStick, and John Baldessari. Congratulations to Caitlin, Megan and Erica!
