NJ Athletic Directors Association to Honor Coach Moriau

Coach Tom Moriau - Ranney's 26-year veteran Athletic Director and new Alumni Relations Director - will be honored later this month.
Coach Tom Moriau will be honored by the Directors of Athletics Association of New Jersey on March 26, 2015 in Atlantic City. The association honors recently retired athletic directors each year at its annual workshop and awards banquet. Mr. Moriau is among 11 former athletic directors across the state to be honored. Mr. Moriau stepped down from his Ranney Athletic Director position—a role he held for 26 years—last summer to take on a new role as Director of Alumni Relations.

Already, Mr. Moriau has led the creation of an Alumni Council and an Alumni Connection Network and established new alumni reunion and networking events. He has also helped to increase connections among Ranney alums as well as between alums and current students and teachers through social media and other innovative campaigns. (Be sure to check out the Ranney Alumni Facebook page at www.ranneyschool.org/ranney.alum.)

“I am honored to be recognized by the Directors of Athletics Association of New Jersey for my years as Director of Athletics at Ranney,” says Coach Moriau. “When I arrived on the Ranney campus in the fall of 1988, my goal was to afford each of our students the best athletic experience possible. To accomplish this goal, I knew I would have to get to know each and every student on campus along with their parents. I feel I accomplished this goal and I am very proud of that.”

Mr. Moriau was the recipient of the 2005 Prep Conference Coach of the Year after leading the Panthers to the New Jersey Patriot Conference Championship. In 2013, Ranney’s first season with the Shore Conference, he was honored as the Coach of the Year for the B Central Division. Tom has also served as President of the New Jersey State Interscholastic Athletic Association (NJSIAA). In October 2013, he was inducted into Ranney’s Panther Athletic Hall of Fame.

As Director of Athletics for nearly three decades at Ranney School, Mr. Moriau achieved a record of more than 400 wins as the Panthers’ Varsity Girls Basketball Team coach, a position he has held since 2001. In addition, he served as the head coach of the softball team (1989-2014) and the boys’ basketball coach (1993-2001) as well as director of Ranney’s Summer Camp. He has positively impacted countless children and families over the years and led the school’s 21st century vision for the scholar-athlete.

Adds Mr. Moriau: “At the end of the day, athletics is all about the kids and each of our students were my number one priority. I am blessed that I had the opportunity to be around such wonderful student-athletes through the years. Directing Ranney Athletics was more than a job—it was a way of life for me. Now, I have the opportunity to reconnect with these students in my new role as Director of Alumni Relations. However, this won’t prevent me from still getting to know all of our current families. I would like to thank the many wonderful Athletic Directors across the state that I have had the opportunity to meet, work with and become friends with. A special thanks to all the Shore Conference Athletic Directors for allowing Ranney to be part of the Shore athletics scene before becoming members of the conference, and of course, for accepting Ranney into the Shore Conference a few years ago. Although the faces may have changed over the years, the friendships, the work ethic and the many hours that all athletic directors put in has never changed. They are the best! I cannot think of a better way to have spent the past 26 years.”
