Two members of the Ranney School Varsity Boys’ Soccer team, Noah Ayers ’17 and Shane Keenan ’17, continued their exploits on the soccer pitch over spring break.

Their club team, the Ocean Lightning U16 Boys’ Soccer team won the Ironbound Spring Warm Up Tournament in Newark, New Jersey.  The team opened the tournament with a 1-1 tie against a good East Brunswick team and then played a fantastic game to beat the New Jersey Knights – last year’s NJ State Cup finalist and the 6th ranked team in New Jersey. Goalkeeper Noah Ayers had multiple saves to preserve the 1-0 victory. On Sunday, the team met a Portuguese team from the Ironbound section of Newark to play for the championship. Multiple amazing saves by Noah Ayers kept the Ocean team in the game in the first half. In the second half, midfielder Shane Keenan scored a free kick from 20 yards out to give Ocean a 1 goal lead. Ironbound tied the game minutes later on a deflection in the box. Minutes later, Shane Keenan gathered a throw-in at midfield, beat 3 Ironbound defenders on a run down the field, and then beat the keeper with a 25 yard shot for the game winner! The team played solid defense for the final 10 minutes and Ocean were champions! The tournament win enabled the team to climb to a 13th place ranking in New Jersey. The team also has other players with a connection to Ranney – three summer counselors play for the team – Brandon Holland, Jordan Townes, and Conner Smith.

Both Shane and Noah are looking forward to returning to Karagianakis Field for their junior seasons in the Shore Conference with the rest of the Panthers next fall.
