Students in US Dedicate Selves to Day of Silence

Students in the Upper School will be participating in a Day of Silence today to conclude the division’s Pride Week.
Students in the Upper School will be participating in a Day of Silence today to conclude the division’s Pride Week, led by the student Gender and Sexuality Alliance (GSA). “The goal of Pride Week is to spread awareness about LGBT+ issues and to promote a message of acceptance and inclusivity here at Ranney,” says GSA president Mohnish Rachuru ’15. “The week also serves to give visibility to the LGBT+ community at Ranney.”

The Day of Silence is a national annual event held annually at middle schools, high schools and universities around the country to "call attention to the silencing effect of anti-LGBT bullying and harassment in schools,” adds Mohnish. “I want students to know that events like this are important in creating a community where everyone feels comfortable in being who they are. These events are also important in starting discussions about social issues not only at Ranney, but in the greater world. I'm excited that Ranney is allowing students to take the initiative on social issues and host events like this. This is the first year of the GSA's existence at Ranney, and I'm really happy to be a part of this.”

Participating students will break their silence during the last period of the day and then discuss in small advisory groups key points and questions from the day.
