Seventh Graders Launch Their Boat
Over the course of three months, 10 students, one teacher and one guide designed, drafted, prepped, sawed, drilled, glued and painted what they call “The Yellow Submarine.”
Ranney School seventh graders set out with a mission to build a canoe from scratch this spring. Over the course of three months, 10 students, one teacher and one guide designed, drafted, prepped, sawed, drilled, glued and painted what they call “The Yellow Submarine.” On June 2, 2015, despite the rainy weather, they hauled their canoe to Deal Lake and launched it into the water.
Students took turns guiding the canoe around the lake. The effort was organized by Project U.S.E., which stands for Urban Suburban Environments. The nonprofit educational organization based in Newark aims to enrich the educational experiences of students in communities throughout New Jersey. Their Boat Building Program is a unique initiative that allows middle and high school age students to explore the maritime history of their region and to learn the science and art involved in boat building.
Ranney boat builders included: Kieran Fino-Saunders, Olivia Knoop, Madison Lubin, Ethan Marston, George Sima, Victoria Tager-Geffner, Gabby Thompson, Shrish Vaidyaselvan, Anthony Virone and Daniela Warren. Middle School Art Teacher Madeleine McCarthy advised the group.
This is the second year that Middle Schoolers have participated in the Project U.S.E. boat building project. Read their 2014 canoe
