Ranney School is proud to announce that its fall crew season opened the week of September 8 with a team of coaches who will be working together to prepare our young rowers for the fall regatta, The Head of the Schuykill, in October, and working to develop a seasonal plan in preparation for a competitive spring season.
After conducting a national search for a crew coach, we are happy to welcome Eric Timken as our head coach and as a full-time educator. While Ranney considered many seasoned and even college coaches in the process, Eric exudes the passion, energy and commitment that we believe will help the Ranney crew program grow in the long-term. A graduate of Blair Academy, where he rowed competitively and took gold in the Stotesbury Regatta, Eric was a multi-sport athlete who found his love in crew. Recruited to a number of programs at the college level, Eric continued to row at the college level for Santa Clara University (SCU) in California. At SCU, Eric served as team captain, leading and mentoring younger student-athletes on the team. His coaches reference Eric’s enthusiasm, hard work and perseverance, and attribute his leadership to the team’s strongest year in its 50-year history.
Eric also possesses knowledge of the many facets of competitive rowing: the importance of coxswains, land/erg training and an appreciation for investment in equipment. In fact, he has experience with rowing Hudsons, the boats which Ranney School has acquired in part from parent support.
When not rowing, Eric is a teacher. He graduated from Blair with a respect for the importance of faculty mentors and advisers and appreciates the importance of the teacher-coach profile that independent schools nurture. Eric has a B.A. in History with an emphasis in Eastern Asia. Eric will join the Middle School faculty as a member of the History Department and will begin his Ranney career under the mentorship of David Ketcham, Assistant Middle School Head.
Returning to the Ranney crew coaching staff is Josh Prown. Josh has served as assistant coach to the Ranney crew team, working with Christine Cicero and, last spring, with Scott Belford. Josh has been with the Ranney crew team since its inception and has an appreciation for the readiness and potential of our athletes, understands the launch site and has witnessed our crew inventory grow. Josh will be a valuable resource to Eric as he assesses our athletes and begins to structure the program in a coherent and cohesive manner that is conducive to establishing a competitive program. We are grateful to have Josh join us to at this important phase in the program, and we are confident he and Eric will work well together.
Eric will be relocating to New Jersey over the next few weeks, officially joining our team and our community the week of September 20. Until then, Josh will support training sessions and parent communication.
Ranney is thrilled to share this news and confident that our young rowers will have a great year on the team! Should you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact Athletic Director Bobby Malone at ext. 1189.
