Girls’ Tennis Swings Way into Conference Tournaments Once Again
The Varsity Girls’ Tennis team has had a historic start to its 2015 season and is competing at states in the coming week.
Update (Oct. 20, 2015): The Girls' Varsity Tennis team continues to win, defeating Moorestown Friends 3-2 on October 8. The #2 seeded Panthers have earned a spot in the Non-Public B South Sectional Final vs. either #1 Gill St. Bernard's or #4 seeded Wardlaw-Hartridge. The match will be played Tuesday, Oct. 13 at the higher seed location. Emma Nisbet will play in 3rd singles of the Prep B Tennis finals October 11; Julianna Poupard and Nikki Goldwert will play in finals for 2nd doubles at the Garden State Tennis Center in Edison.
The Varsity Girls’ Tennis team has had a historic start to its 2015 season. Led by Head Coach Christel Contrera and Assistant Coach Heidi Bonney, the Panthers were undefeated in Shore Conference competition entering the Shore Conference Tournament this fall. The #14 seeded Girls’ Tennis Team defeated #19 Colts Neck (5-0), #3 seeded Rumson Fair-Haven (4-1) and #5 seeded Freehold Borough (3-2) before entering the semifinals against Shore Regional.
Although the team lost 3-2 in the semifinals, they are still moving forward in the brackets for the State Team Tennis Tournament. In fact, the Panthers have been seeded #2 in the NJSIAA Non-Public B South Tournament and, on October 7, Ranney will host the winner of the #7 Immaculata and #10 Our Lady of Mercy match, which is being played October 1.
Ranney’s Varsity Girls’ Tennis team previously won the Shore Conference B Central Divisional Championship in 2014, 2013 and 2012. This season marks the first time since joining the Shore Conference in 2012 that the team has advanced beyond the second round in the Shore Conference Tournament. In 2014, the team won a tournament match for the first time before losing in the second round to Freehold Borough.
“The Varsity Girls’ Tennis team is making school history in many ways this fall,” says Athletic Director Bobby Malone. “The entire community is proud of their accomplishments and looks forward to the month ahead. The team has worked very hard over the past few months and their work will continue to pay off.”
