Junior Makes Finalist Round in State Pageant

Sydney Harley '17 recently competed in the Miss New Jersey Teen USA pageant.
Junior Sydney Harley of West Allenhurst recently competed in the Miss New Jersey Teen USA pageant. Out of 600-plus applicants, she was chosen as one of 83 state finalists to compete for the 2016 title. Although Sydney did not make it to the last round, she is grateful for the experience and now transitioning back to normal school and teenage life. She took a moment to answer a few questions:

How did you get involved in the pageant?
I received a letter in the mail adverting the Miss New Jersey Teen pageant and, after some further research, I decided that it would be a nice change of pace as well as a new experience. This was my first pageant.

How did Ranney impact your performance in the pageant?
My interactions with Ranney's music and theater program gave me the confidence to go through with the pageant. Thanks to performing in the school drama productions and musicals, as well as Coffee Houses and music concerts, the stage has become somewhat of a second home for me. I had no trouble walking on the pageant stage, as a result.

What are your current plans for after graduation in 2017?
I hope to go to California to pursue the romance languages (i.e., Spanish and French) and a career in law.

Have any Ranney teachers inspired you and how so?
There is not just one teacher that's inspired me, but rather multiple teachers, if not all of them. I could not be where I am today without the support and brilliant education given to me by my middle and high school teachers. Everything that I have learned from them so far had constructed me into the person I am today.

Sydney is a member of the school’s Gay Straight Alliance and knitting club and plays on Ranney’s softball and basketball teams. She has been inducted into the Spanish National Honor Society, Thespian Society and Tri-M Music Honor Society. She noted that, “Should I be given the opportunity, I would like to pursue future pageants, but my studies come first; especially at this point in the year!” Best of luck, Sydney!
