Science Olympiad Students Place at Regionals
Ranney’s Middle and Upper School Science Olympiad teams earned medals at the January 2016 regional competition.
Ranney’s Middle and Upper School Science Olympiad teams competed in a regional tournament at Camden County College Blackwood on January 14, 2016. Both teams came home with 2nd place medals. In the “Reach for the Stars Event,” Middle Schoolers Arjun Sobti and Rohan Sikand placed. In the “Write-it Do-it” event, Upper Schoolers Alexa Biswal and Rebekah Lo placed.
In the stars event, students must be able to explain the basic concepts of mathematics and astrophysics relating to stellar evolution, as well as the general characteristics of stars, galaxies and more, and identify a star's spectral class, surface temperature and evolutionary stage. In the latter event, one team member is given a structure built from some sort of construction materials; the same member must write a set of instructions on how to build it the structure. The, the first team member is given those instructions and materials to recreate the object as accurately as possible.

Middle School team members include Rahul Sobti, Alex Senderov, Justin Rinaldo, Seth Marx, Shrish Vaidyaselvan, Mason Leong, Alessandra Arege, George Sima, Madison Lubin, Jatin Nayyar, Arjun Sobti, Rohan Sikand, Brooke Schmelz, John Kirmani, Elena Raccuia, Jaren Nawy, Lara Chu, Tatiana Lanfranchi, Benjamin Sullens and Kieran Fino-Saunders.
The team is coached by faculty members Betty Williams, Madeleine McCarthy, Nachum Serota and Matthew D’Amato.
