Robotics Students Earn Multiple Awards at RecentTournament

Eight teams competed in end-of-January events as students gear up for states.
Eight Ranney teams competed in two different tournaments over the last weekend of January 2016. On Saturday, January 30, six of our teams (B, C, D, F, J and K) competed in the largest VEX competition to ever be held in New Jersey, with a total of 50 teams. The event was held at South Brunswick High School and the competition was extremely tough, yet all six Ranney teams finished in the top 40. In fact, four of our teams placed in the top 30 and two of them placed in the top 10. Our J team (Dana Schioppo, Will Zheng, Mike Zheng and Jack DeNicola) won a Judges Award for their design.

On Sunday, January 31, two Ranney teams (A and G) competed in Cape May, with 18 other teams present. Our G team (Kiran Shah and Toby Savage) won a Create Award for their "impressive engineering notebook and creative solution to this year's challenge" and our A team (Ben Iglesia, Chip Johnson and Chris Glenn) won the tournament overall! In addition, our A team earned the top Programming Skills score for the day.

"This event marked the fourth time this year that our A Team has made it to the finals. They have had three 2nd place finishes and were eager to secure a win," says Robotics Club Advisor Chiara Shah. "We are thrilled that they earned that championship trophy."

Currently, Ranney Robotics has four teams qualified for the State Championship, to be held February 21, 2016. We also have three teams qualified for the CREATE US Open, a national tournament taking place in Council Bluffs, Iowa, in April. Our three Upper School teams will join the Ranney Middle and Lower School teams that qualified in December.
