Twenty-six Upper School musicians collaborated with two local independent schools to refine their singing and stage presence.
On January 28, 26 Ranney School choral students traveled to Morristown, NJ, to attend the 2nd Annual NJAIS Choral Consortium hosted by Morristown-Beard School (MBS). Members of the Ranney Upper School Chorus, under the direction of Mrs. Lillianne Torrente, joined vocal students from the Morristown-Beard School Chorus (Mr. Bruce Van Hoven, director) and The Delbarton School's “Schola Cantorum” (Mr. David Blazier, director). Also attending was Mr. John Doyle, Ranney’s Performing Arts Chair.
The morning began an address by Dr. Matthew Webb, attending clinician. Dr. Webb is the current director of music at the Presbyterian Church of Morristown and has served on the faculties of Drew University, Elon University, UNC Greensboro, the UNC School of the Arts and the Canterbury School. He joined the Choral Consortium this year to work with the students to refine performance and musicianship skills.
As part of the morning introductions, the three directors shared their favorite vocal warm-ups with the group and each chorus had an opportunity to perform selections from their current repertoire and to work with Dr. Webb to refine their performance. Ranney School vocal students did extremely well and were complimented by Dr. Webb, who was impressed with their ensemble skills and their ability to incorporate his performance suggestions easily and successfully. He complimented soloist Evan Schultz ’17 and student accompanist Anna Effenberger ’19 for their performances and leadership skills.
Afternoon workshops included combining the three school choruses together to work with Dr. Webb to perfect "The Storm is Passing Over," a traditional spiritual song that speaks to endurance and a positive outlook. The students were accompanied by Mrs. Francesca Kubian-Geidel, a retired music educator who continues working as a pianist and conductor throughout the metropolitan area.
At the conclusion of the Choral Consortium, the students performed together for MBS invited guests and then bid each other farewell. Everyone agreed it was a successful day and look forward to next year.
