The Upper School Presents Carousel

Rodgers and Hammerstein's Carousel opened March 10, with encore performances March 11 and 12.
“This American classic features some of the most powerful music ever written for the stage, including ‘If I Loved You,’ ‘Mister Snow,’ and the memorable ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone,’” says Director John Doyle, Ranney’s Performing Arts Chair. “Our production reintroduces many of our ‘older’ audience members to those musical masterpieces that they remember with fondness, while introducing some wonderful musical theater to the younger audience members, adding to their memories and cultural education.”
 
The lead performers and ensemble have been working hard for the past six weeks with musical director and Ranney alumnus Ross Bernstein to learn the vocals from this iconic show, while Ranney’s All-Division Orchestra Director Dr. Dorothy Sobieski and the Upper School orchestra have learned a vast amount of music to support the performers. “Our goal to have a 100% student orchestra for our musical pit is coming closer to a reality,” says Mr. Doyle. Last year, 50% of Ranney’s Upper School musical orchestra members were students, while this year, it is made up of 75%--the remainder are local professional musicians. The school puts on three musicals annually and more than 250 of its students participate in band, orchestra or chorus.
