Sophomore Runs Swim Across America Event for Cancer Research

On February 24, 10th-grader Matthew Chang led a Swim Across America (SAA) fundraising event for the Ranney community. Middle and Upper School swim teams and the swimmers had the honor of meeting and obtaining invaluable swim advice from Craig Beardsley, the SAA veteran celebrity swimmer and member of the 1980 U.S. Olympic Swim Team. The event raised close to $1,400 in just a few days; funds will go toward cancer research, prevention and treatment at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center.

Says Matthew, “Last February, to my great disappointment and surprise, my grandmother was diagnosed with gall bladder cancer. She has been fighting it every day since. I wanted to be able to help her since she was always there and taking care of me when I was younger, so after much research, I was able to find the Swim Across America charity. It relates to me in many ways, one in which the fact that it incorporates swimming as a way to raise money for cancer research, and I love swimming and on the swim team. As a result, I did one of the SAA open swims in Long Island Sound this past August, and had a fulfilling experience that raised more than $1,500. Then, this year, I came up with the idea to do SAA at Ranney in the form of an end-of-season swim party…. I want to continue and start a tradition by making Ranney School a part of the Swim Across America community!”

Fundraising will remain open for the rest of 2016. Details can be found on Matthew’s webpage.
