20+ Fields Represented at Ranney Career Day

Upper School students got a head start on making choices about their futures at the 2016 Career Day event, led by alumni and parent volunteers.
Students in 9th-12th grades had the opportunity to hear from experts representing more than 20 fields at Ranney School’s Career Day 2016. Alums and parents spent the morning of March 9 on campus sharing their first-hand experience with students in careers related to law, medicine, entrepreneurship, global engineering, the music industry, architecture, TV production, nutrition, graphic design and more.

Led by Ranney’s Alumni Relations Office, the event also featured a keynote speaker, Mr. Walter (David) Greason, Class of 1991. Mr. Greason is a professor in the Department of History and Anthropology and the Department of Management and Decision Sciences at Monmouth University. He is also the Founder of the International Center for Metropolitan Growth. In his talk, "A New Era of Acceleration," Mr. Greason spoke to students about the skills they are gaining from their Ranney experience and the origins of their education. He also offered advice going forward to be the new Russell G. Ranneys and Ben Franklins of the world.

Afterward, students were able to attend three different 40-minute career sessions of their choice and then had the opportunity to ask questions one-on-one during lunch.

Seniors Sarah Klein and Maddie Denton said they were happy to have learned more details about the digital marketing field from the Class of 2006’s Alana Katz, who now works as a Regional Media Marketing Manager for BMW. “It was also helpful that the presenter talked about her college education and what may be required,” added Sarah.

Senior Ryan Pelman attended the Law & Intellectual Property session by the Class of 1984’s Jay Connelly, who serves as counsel to the Maldjian Law Group in Tinton Falls. “I am interested in both law and business, so it helped to hear about this topic as a possible specialized field I can go into. I also learned a bit about how to start a business,” he said.

The presenters were equally impressed with the students. “I was shocked at how intrigued they were by wills and trusts,” said Jon Lomurro, Class of 1998, who spoke to students about Medical Malpractice, Personal Injury and Criminal Defense Law in collaboration with Stuart Berger, also of the Class of 1998. The attorneys work with Lomurro Law Group and Borowsky & Borowsky, LLC, respectively. “The students were very receptive and had great questions,” added Mr. Lomurro. “The day provided a new way of looking at learning as it may apply to them later in life. There are many skills, for example, that you may not want to learn at the time, but they force their way back into your life as adults and you have to roll with them.”

Director of Alumni Relations Tom Moriau was pleased to see alums on campus, not only interacting with current students but also taking time to say hello to former teachers and discovering what’s changed across the school—such as the improved lunch options in the dining hall, noted one alum.  “It was great to see so many alums return and so many parents volunteer their time to share their knowledge with our students,” he said. “Giving our Upper Schoolers, beginning in the 9th grade, insight into specific careers will benefit them as they begin to think about college and their journeys ahead. We are grateful to all the individuals who came out today to be part of this special event. They not only encouraged our students to think about their futures, but also to ask questions and to be inspired.”
