Ranney Arts Launch “The Adirondack Chair Project”

Students create inspirational spaces for the community to enjoy campus.
You may have noticed a few Adirondack chairs popping up across the Ranney School campus. The chairs are being created by students in the Visual Arts Department and, thus far, include a children’s books chair that was dedicated to the RSPA Book Fair last fall, a theater program chair crafted in collaboration with the Upper School Thespian society, and a tennis-themed chair devoted to the winning Varsity Girls’ Tennis team.

“This project came about through discussions with students over the years about wanting to be outdoors more and wanting to provide places for students to enjoy the campus,” explains Ranney Visual Arts Department Chair Kate Greenberg. “The project is also aligned with our growing sculpture curriculum, which calls for students to design site-specific installations.”
 
In this video, senior Stephanie Falletta explains the project further and shows off some of the completed chairs.

An additional 15 chairs are planned beyond the three completed works. Future chair themes include one for each department (e.g., science, history, English, music, world languages), as well as a blackboard-paint Mathematics chair upon which students can write and solve problems using an attached eraser and chalk, and special promotion chairs for the fifth-grade class and senior class graduating this spring.

Student artists to date have included: Stephanie Falletta, Anna Effenberger, Maddy Shanley, Olivia Smith, Anjali Mann, Grace Cornell and Max Chalnick.
