A Q&A with Elizabeth Guli, Class of 2001

After graduating from Ranney School in 2001, Elizabeth Guli earned her B.A. from Tufts College and her M.A. from San Francisco State University. She taught middle school in Oakland for three years and at Sequoia High School for four years, all in Special Education. Currently, Elizabeth serves as the Head of the Special Education Department at Sequoia and has presented at Teach for America programs. Here she provides insight into her career and Ranney tenure.

What inspired you to enter the field of special education?
I enjoy helping people learn, particularly to learn to read, to gain insight into self and others through literature. Plus, I love teaching people to write, to develop and express their beliefs, logic, and experiences with clarity.  Special education teachers are trained to give all students access to content…. And I am grateful for the emphasis that special education - legislation and pedagogical training - places on equity.

How did Ranney prepare you for the work you do today?
Some wonderful teachers at Ranney offered a caliber of academic rigor that broadened my perception of what and how I was capable of learning. In Mrs. McCleary’s AP Chem., Mr. Oraminatti’s AP Bio., and in all of Dr. Cross’s English courses, I was offered the opportunity to think beyond my years and beyond my little life. With these educators’ guidance, I developed skills, perspective, and, most of all, perseverance that carried me through the first, grueling years of teaching.

What advice would you offer to current Ranney Upper School students about to embark on their collegiate journeys and careers?
You have spent these past years propelling yourself toward your imminent destination. At this point, who you are and what you most deeply desire are formed and accessible to you, if you look within. Reflect NOW on what you love and what you want for your life years from now. Let the resulting insights be your guides.  When is doubt, pursue what makes you truly happy.
